ANALYZING: Paying College Athletes
SPT 333 Milestone One Guidelines and Rubric Overview: For this first milestone, due in Module Three, you will submit a 2- to 3-page paper analyzing the moral, ethical, or legal issue in sports that you have chosen to examine for your final project, the personal plan of action. The purpose of this first milestone is to provide you with an opportunity to assess your issue, generally, and to analyze it from different perspectives. Thoroughly understanding the issue will prepare you for proposing potential solutions to the issue going forward. Prompt: First, review the list of moral, ethical, and legal issues in sport you discussed in your Module One journal assignment and the course resources you have familiarized yourself with so far. Next, identify the issue you wish to address and provide examples to show the impact of this issue on the sport industry. You may want to think about the following questions: How does this issue affect organizations, teams, and fans? What other cultural or social issues affect the outcome of this issue? Is sport the best avenue to affect change for this issue? Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
Identify the topic area you wish to investigate, and explain the evolution of the issue and its significance in relation to the topic. Be sure to discuss the type of issue (moral, ethical, legal) in your explanation of its significance.
What is the impact (or potential impact) of the issue on sports as a global industry? Provide examples.
What are some of the wider cultural, social, and political implications of the issue, and what relevant theories and research evidence might you apply to your analysis of the issue? (For example, you may apply gender theory if relevant to your issue to highlight the social implications.)
Be sure to apply any instructor feedback you receive on this submission to your Milestone Two submission (due in Module Five) and to your final project, the personal plan of action.
Rubric Guidelines for Submission: Milestone One should be 2 to 3 pages, double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and the latest edition of the APA manual for formatting and citations. Please note that the grading rubric for this milestone submission is not identical to that of the final project. The Final Project Rubric will include an additional “Exemplary” category that provides guidance as to how you can go above and beyond “Proficient” in your final submission.
