Q: SPSS installation problem.

A: For those using windows 8 and they aren't able to run as administrator with just need to click on properties, compatibility tab and run the compatibility troubleshooter and test the program. After that the program installed correctly and its working for me.

Q: How do I determine what is an input error on the data view table? How do you determine the variable containing the error. I have the frequency table for each variable. Also in question 5 I am not understanding what to do with computing the variables. I click question 8a and on the right side missing then missing values and nothing comes up.

A: For Q1, there should be only two values. 0=no and 1=yes. But if you look at the Q1 frequency table, there is a value=2. (Row 82, highlight Q1 and control+F) For Q5,  you need to compute a new variable called q8sum, which equals to Q8a + Q8b + Q8c + Q8d. Then use frequency table to get the distribtuon of q8sum. The values that are not “100" indicate an input error.

Q: For Chapter 18, Exercise 1, Questions 4: When calculating the number of movies that this person sees, should we calculate the amount of money spent on snacks as 0.24*2 or 0.24*12? We aren't sure if we should consider the dollar value spent, or the corresponding questionnaire value of 2.

A: The model should take  the following form y(Q3)=constant+b1*Q2+b2*Q4+b3*Q13

You need to find out the corresponding Q2, Q4 and Q13 value. Here, for example, Q4=.24, b2=12, Q13=2 (2=sophomore). B3=-.29.  So b2*Q4 should be .24*12.

Q: Ch 18, Ex 2, Q 4: The question tells us to do a 'Descriptives' analysis and then examine the resulting correlations matrix. But I don't think this process gives us a correlations matrix. From what I can tell, we have to go to 'Analyze > Correlations'. I have done the analysis using bivariate correlation, but I'm not sure if this is right. A: You are correct.  The approach used by the book is for older version.

Q. We have been using our corrected data sheet for the Chapter 18 exercises because that is the same as the one that was downloaded from the book website. Is this right?

A: Correct. This is the same as the dataset without error.

Q: Chapter 18, EX2 factor analysis question5 (p498) says Go to analyze-Data Reduction-Factor. It should be Go to analyze-Dimension Reduction-Factor. Is this right?

A: Yes. The older version use Data Reduction. The newer version is Dimension Reduction.
