Speech and Debate Analysis

On October 4th 2019, me and two other friends went and watch a dark comedy play called Speech and Debate in the Spotlight Theater on campus. The play is about three teenager who gets together and tires to perform a musical. It was presented by the department of Theater and directed by Connor Bezeredi. My friends and I decided to sit close to the center of the stage and in the last row, were we can get a clearer view. I really enjoy watching this play and found the play hilarious. In this paper I will discuss how the set design, costume design, lighting and sound were used in the Play.

A trust space was used for this play and the stage was separated into four different sections to create four different places. The play did not used any flats or platforms to create distinct, identifiable places. Line was used to create the three pentagon web. The webs were representing technology and the problems that each character have in their life. On the up stage right, the web was created for Howie and a black computer chair was in front of the web. Red and white lines was used to create the web. On the web there was a rainbow flag, a drawing and a picture that indicates that he is gay. For scene one, Howie was setting in the chair with his laptop. The chair was the only scene design here that helps to create his room. Another web was created for Solomon on the up stage left with a tall stool chair in front of it. In-between the two web is a white wall that is use to create a computer screen for the audience to see what the character is typing or doing the laptop. The third web was located on the down stage right close to the audience. In front of the web there’s a white chair, black desk and a keyboard next to it to create Diwata’s room. The scene design here still created an identifiable places without using a flats or platform. The set was use when Diwata was doing a broad cast on her laptop and the keyboard was used to play music. Diwata’s broad cast was projected on the wall and this gives the audience a close up of her. All the set designs are pretty solid and not bulky. This creates a lot of space for the actor and actress.

For the costume design, I think they did a good job on communicate a sense of the given circumstances for all the character. My favorite costume was Diwata’s, on her first scene she was wearing a blue hoodie and a black choker on her neck. Her hair was tied up and she’s also wearing heavy makeup. Her costume change four times throughout the play. Her costume did and makeup did reflect her outgoing personality. In one of the scene she was wearing a blue cotton dress with a white apron and this shows the audience that she works at a coffee shop. In another scene she was wearing a black tank top with a green checkered blouse and with a pair of black yoga pants. This costume design shows that is a high student and loves dance.

Before the play even begins there were three different color of lighting being used on stage. The color red was use on the up stage right and the color blue was use on the upper right. On the down stage right the color purple and all these lights creates a different place. Music was used beginning of the show with no vocal sound and used during intermission. The music created a creepy mood. For the first scene the light was soft and draws focus on the character Howie and the lighting had a little bit of yellow to it. Everywhere else on stage became dark and this creates a sense of night time. When the three character were at school the lighting becomes brighter and the setting level increases it creates a day time scene. There is also a black out in between each scene.
