Speech on Stress Its effects and Its Management

A story is told of a young man that received instructions from their boss. Attentively they took notes writing down every single instruction that was expected of them. As the boss was concluding the instructions, he went ahead and asked how many minutes the young man needed to complete the task. Being slow to answer, the boss decided to make a suggestion on whether thirty minutes would be fine. The young man absently minded said yes, the boss was even surprised noting that he had approximated the task would need some three or so hours. After he left and returned two hours later, he found the young man staring at his desk top with the notes open just as had been three hours ago. Of course it was not a beautiful scenario, the young man was given a show cause letter, however this was the beginning of his transformation. When a root cause analysis was conducted it was revealed that the young man was stressed resulting in his inability to execute tasks and concentrate maximally. Today I would love us to share a little bit on stress its effects and its management.

Stress has multiple effects on the human body. Stress manifests as anxiety, fatigue, disinterest among other things(Michie).A number of them manifest physically while most are evident within the emotional realm of the human being. Some of the physical effects of stress include increase in blood pressure. Sweating and even shivering have been known to result from stress. Once stressed a person is likely to lose weight or gain weight immensely. This implies that stress has the ability to change how the body metabolizes the food taken. Another explanation for the variations in body weight stems from the fact that stress can easily result in change in eating habits. Some people when stressed tend to eat a lot while others keep off food. Stress can also weaken the immune system and stressed persons are likely to have many more other ilnnesees easily attacking them Psychological effects associated with stress include a loss in concentration and also increased forgetfulness. Such manifestations can result in lowered performances at the workplace as well as increased conflicts with colleagues. Stress is treated by most people as a private challenge and one is expected to handle it by themselves. Thus when one is stressed the surrounding environment is likely to exacerbate the stress. Most people are thus isolated when they get to be stressed. As colleagues we ought to be cautious when we see some of our friends who were averagely social begin to isolate themselves. Expecting them to be out rightly open with their challenges and come to us may not necessarily work and prudence dictates that we break barriers and try to let them open up on what their challenges might be.

Medically, there are various ways that are suggested and have been proven effective in the management of stress. Some are psychological while others ate physical(“Healthy Ways to Handle Life’s Stressors”). Keeping a positive attitude is one of the tools that one can use to navigate the rough patches that come their way in their journey of life. This means one has to constantly maintain a positive outlook towards life in spite of the pressures and challenges that life throws their way. Good nutrition has also been proven to be effective at managing stress. Simon Schuster in his book mind your heart makes a case for good nutrition in the management of stress(Mind Your Heart: A Mind/Body Approach to Stress Management, Exercise, and ... - Aggie Casey, Herbert Benson, Ann MacDonald - Google Books). The book gives suggestions of exercises one can engage in and the potential benefits they are likely to generate for them.

Counselling which is an old age practice is also a critical tool in ensuring stability in the lives of people that are undergoing stress(Sahranavard et al.). It is very advisable that as a person when you take note of repeated stressful episodes to seek out the wisdom of a counsellor. Counsellors are professionally trained to help people in such situations and in most cases have the experience and know how we need in such times.

Recognizing stress in an individual is not a simple affair. This is because stress in most cases is usually treated as part of the normal hustles of life. There are many curve balls that life throws at people and people can easily tend to believe that it is normal to be overworked and anxious. It is however wise that we make a distinction between intense moments in life and stress. The former is transient and the latter is more chronic. How we cope with the transient moments has a bearing on whether we end up stressed or not. Living a stress free calls for an adaptive approach to life. This may mean incorporating a number of the prior highlighted approaches even before the intense and difficult moments in life begin to over power us.

There is definitely much more that can be said concerning stress and its management. Key to note is that most people when stressed will likely isolate themselves and best practice is that of watching over your neighbor to be sure they are fine. I appreciate that we have been able to share briefly on stress and simple management approaches that can make us more productive in life. Thank you all
