Special Topic Project
CD 350
Step 1 and Slide 1 PC1
For this project, you will ultimately be creating a power point.
I have built optional project checkpoints into this course to help you progress at a steady rate. You will not receive any points for submitting these project checkpoints, BUT the benefit of submitting them is that you will receive feedback on those slides before you submit your final project to be graded.
The slide numbers that follow in these instructions are suggestions. For attractiveness, you are welcome to have more than 10 slides in your final power point. Under no circumstance will you have less than 10 slides in your final power point.
Students will watch the documentary “The Sink Is Our Fridge: The American Kids That Can't Afford Food | Absolute Documentaries” ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhmq5k-7fs0) to explore poverty impacts on children throughout America. You will need to watch the documentary in its entirety. To complete your project, you will choose one (1) “focus child” to focus on:
Focus Child: Kaylee
Focus Child: Jasmine
Focus Child: Sarah
Slide 1 of your power point should be the name of the focus child you chose, and your first and last name.
Step 2 and Slide 2 PC1
Type the question below in the title of your slide (so where above I have “Step 2 and Slide 2”), then use the large text box (where these words are) to answer this question.
Your answer should be a minimum of 250 words.
Question: What impacts of poverty had you not considered before watching this documentary?
Step 3 and Slide 3 PC1
On slide 3, you need to provide poverty statistics for both the United States and the state in which you live. You can find these on the United States Census Bureau website (census.gov).
Be sure to include in-text citations in APA (7th edition) format. You will also need to include the full reference in APA (7th edition) format on a later slide.
Here are some resources to assist you with in-text citations (and if you’re a CFS student, APA is discussed in depth in FAM 200):
In-text citations basic rules https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/in_text_citations_the_basics.html
In-text citations author rules https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/in_text_citations_author_authors.html
Hint: Your in-text citation for this slide should look something like (U.S. Census Bureau, YEAR)
Step 4 and Slide 4 PC2
Apply the ecological systems model to the “focus child” you chose for this documentary. You will list each “system” and then use information/examples from the documentary to fill in each “system”. Be sure to justify why you included each example in that system.
As a reminder, the focus child goes in the very center. THEN there are five “systems”: microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem. Ecological theory was covered in Chapter 2, pages 44-47. I encourage you to test your knowledge of the systems with the active learning example on page 46 before beginning this slide. This is also a good resource for you https://www.psychologynoteshq.com/bronfenbrenner-ecological-theory/
I suggest you organize slide 4 like this:
Microsystem: list examples and justifications here
Mesosystem: this system is a bit of a trick, because it’s just how the people/places in your mesosystem interact, so you’ll just list those interactions with a bidirectional arrow (-------). No new examples/justifications needed.
Exosystem: list examples and justifications here
Macrosystem: list examples and justifications here
Chronosystem: list examples and justifications here
Step 5 and Slide 5 (1 of 2) PC3
Slide 5 will require you to use the library data base to find original research articles (also called empirical articles or journal articles). These articles are usually broken down into five main sections:
Introduction
Literature review: Cites other peoples research on the topic
Methods: Information about the research study the authors of that paper conducted, including who the participants were, how they were recruited, what questionnaire they filled out/what interview questions they were asked, etc., where/when the study was conducted.
Results: The nitty-gritty statistics with numbers, charts, and/or graphs, or focus group or interview data
Discussion/Conclusion
There are several databases and ways you can find articles, but for those of you new to it, here are some steps to get you started:
Go to https://lib.usm.edu/
Click on “Articles & Databases” in the black, left-hand margin.
Click on the letter ‘A’ and then click on “APA PsycINFO”
On the page that comes up, look at the search options.
a. Under “publication type” select “Peer reviewed journal”
b. Click the box under “Peer Reviewed”
d. Under “Methodology” click on “EMPIRICAL STUDY”
In the top search box type in whatever keywords you want to search for and hit “search”. You may want to try things like “poverty”, “effects of poverty on children”, “poverty and social emotional development”, etc.
Step 5 and Slide 5 (2 of 2) PC3
To complete this slide, you need to find a minimum of three (3) empirical articles that discuss the long-term effects/outcomes children living in poverty. You will then have to break that information down into each developmental domain we’re covering this semester: physical development, cognitive development, and social and emotional development (hint: chapters 5-13 are broken down in your textbook by age group and developmental domain).
Note: This slide requires you to know what would be considered physical development, cognitive development, or social/emotional development and make those connections to the articles on your own.
Be sure to include in-text citations in APA (7th edition) format on this slide to show where you got your information from. If you do not provide in-text citations on this slide, AND the full reference on your reference slide, there is no way for me to verify whether you’ve met the empirical article requirement or not, and if you view the rubric, this means you will get 0/15 points.
Links to help you with in-text citations can be found on slide 3. Hint: If you find an empirical article I wrote alone in 2019, your in-text citation would simply be (Wright, 2019). You will also include the full reference in APA (7th edition) format on a later slide.
I suggest you organize slide 5 this slide like this:
Physical Development: Discuss what long-term effects the research says poverty has on physical development (in-text citation here)
Cognitive Development: Discuss what long-term effects the research says poverty has on cognitive development (in-text citation here)
Social-Emotional Development: Discuss what long-term effects the research says poverty has on social-emotional development (in-text citation here)
Step 6 and Slide 6 PC4
On slide 5 you discussed the future, so now for slide 6 of your power point, you will use information and examples from the documentary to identify how poverty is currently affecting the “focus child” in each developmental domain.
For example, if your focus child is Alexa, you will provide an example of how living in poverty is affecting her physically, an example of how it is affecting her cognitively, and an example of how it is affecting her socially and emotionally.
The documentary will not clearly spell this out for you, this slide requires you to think about what is shown in the documentary and then apply what you have learned about the developmental domains.
I suggest you organize it like this:
Physical: Write your example here and justify
Cognitive: Write your example here and justify
Social-Emotional: Write your example here and justify
Step 7 and Slide 7 PC5
Type the question below in the title of your slide (so where above I have “Step 7 and Slide 7”), then use the large text box (where these words are) to answer this question.
Question: What resources/programs/initiatives does your community have to buffer children from the negative effects of poverty?
If you do not know what initiatives are already in place in your local community, this may require a google search or asking someone (that isn’t your instructor).
Step 8 and Slide 8 PC5
On this slide, list each resource/program/initiative from slide 7. Then, beside it, identify which “system” from the ecological systems model (microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, or chronosystem) that resource/program/initiative is addressing and why you think that.
Note: A resource/program/initiative may address more than one system.
Step 9 and Slide 9 PC5
On this slide, list the “systems” from the ecological systems model that your community is not yet addressing (so if you had two programs listed on slide 8 that you linked to the microsystem and mesosystem, on this slide you would list the exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem).
Then, beside each system, list a resource/program/initiative your community could add to address each of those systems. These could be resources/programs/initiatives that you know of that exist in other communities, or ideas that may not exist yet.
If you do not have any “systems” to list on this slide because your content on slide 8 showed all 5 systems are already being addressed, on this slide you will need to write a minimum of 250 words suggesting additional resources/programs/initiatives your community could add or suggest changes to existing programs to better fit the needs in your community.
Step 10 and Slide 10 PC5
Slide 10 will be a reference list in APA (7th edition) format.
At a minimum, you will have 4 references on this slide: One reference for your statistics on slide 3, and three references for the three research articles required on slide 5.
Here are some resources to assist you with your reference list (and if you’re a CFS student, APA is discussed in depth in FAM 200):
