I think that it is so important that as educators we acknowledge that it is not simply our job to teach science, math, english, etc. - but it is also, and maybe more importantly, being a teacher means having the opportunity to make a real difference and change in students, families, and community member’s lives on a daily basis. Personally, I don’t remember what specific lessons and standards I learned in high school, but I do remember the teachers that had me excited to be in their class, and inspired me to grow and become the best version of myself. Making sure students feel safe, cared for, and welcome while building authentic relationships with students is where the real impact of teachers lies.

Hi Class,

A quote that I keep at the bottom of my work email is, "Every child can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way. George Evans." I fully believe that every child is able to learn, we just need to figure out how to instruct them and give them time. One year, we had a relatively new resource teacher start in our district. She jumped on the bandwagon with our other resource teacher who told me my self-contained students should never be seen on campus. They should come to school on the bus, get their breakfast and go to my classroom where they would stay for the rest of the day. The special area teachers were supposed to come to my room to work with the kids. I politely thanked her and told her that I fully believed in inclusion and fully believed my students could learn. That year, the resource teachers told me that I was crazy to have some of my students take the regular state assessment. I told them that I truly believed some of my students would do better than their students on the assessments. Yup, when the results came in, several of my students did better than the students receiving resource support on the state assessment. Why? I believe they could and they believed they could. In my 7 years with that district, I had 11 students transition from self-contained to the general education setting with resource support. The two other resource teachers, well the one finally retired and the other left teaching in public schools to work for a university.

Never underestimate the ability of a student.

5. Briana wrote: After watching the video “FIEP: A Facilitated IEP Meeting”, I think that the IEP meeting did a great job of showing collaboration between everyone that was involved in the meeting. The principal does a good job of making sure everyone knows what the purpose of the meeting is about and then it goes on to talk about their goal. He does a good job facilitating and making sure that everyone is able to express their feelings on the subject.This IEP meeting showed how much each of the staff members cared about Amy and wanting to do what is best for her and help her succeed within her education. “Provide students with authentic learning tasks that will channel their abilities—and behavior—in productive ways” (Johnson, 2017). They did a great job working to make sure Amy’s learning and behavior problems would get solved. It was interesting to see that even though the mom of Amy was not agreeing with them they stuck their ground on what they thought was going to be the best option for Amy to be able to be more independent and be able to read on her “own”. Another thing that was good was that everyone had their own view on what should be done. They took into account how the mother felt and the other teachers that have seen the student (Amy) work within the classroom. Also, they didn't go about a brain just by stating yes and no answer the principal/facilitator asked if they were in consensus and if that was something that they could agree upon.The visual aids keep things on track for all the people that were in attendance at the meeting. It is an interesting concept to have, I have seen other IEP meetings and never really seen visual aids be put up.
