FLEX COURSE SCHEDULE
Appropriate work pace is critical in an online course, so you are encouraged to follow DUE DATES listed in this syllabus. To accommodate unexpected circumstances that may arise, the deadlines for work submission follow the flex model. For assignments, discussions, quizzes and exams, the DUE DATE listed in Blackboard and VHL coincides with the recommended dates in this syllabus (see schedule
below). Assignments, quizzes, and exams also have an END DATE, one of which is around the midpoint and the other, the last day of classes. The flex model rewards students for doing work on time and does not penalize students for completing late work (no matter what the reason). Work will not be accepted past the end dates.
Assignments, quizzes, and exams with DUE DATES prior to the midpoint can be submitted by the drop-dead END DATE of 7/1/21 at 11:59 PM—this work is eligible for full credit and will not be accepted past the END DATE.
Assignments, quizzes, and exams with DUE DATES after the midpoint can be submitted by the drop-dead END DATE of 7/27/21 11:59 PM—this work is eligible for full credit and will not be accepted past the END DATE.
Pay attention to the END DATES—work submitted before the END DATE earns full credit.
The midterm and final exam must be taken by the date and time indicated on the course schedule. No retakes, make-ups, or late submissions allowed for the midterm and final.
Work will not be accepted past the END DATES and grades of zero will be assigned in this case.
Student Commitment to Learning
Success in any foreign language requires discipline and diligent practice in each of the four skill areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Activities and assignments provide students the opportunity to practice all skills. Online learning requires a greater level of discipline, but students have every opportunity to succeed.
7
Your instructor makes every effort to engage all students in learning the language and can monitor online student progress on a daily basis.
· Learning a second language takes daily effort. You need to schedule time to practice the material. Treat it as though it were a regularly scheduled class with specific meeting times. Recognize that you will get out of this course what you put into it.
· As a student in an online language class, you will additionally need to take time to first become familiar with the technology.
· It is important for every class member to participate within this learning community. This means logging into the class AT LEAST once a day for the purpose of checking email or announcements. You should plan to work intensively in the course AT LEAST 2-3 times per week.
ASSIGNMENTS, ASSESSMENTS, & PROJECTS
Supersite Assignments: A student must complete online assignments by the deadlines indicated on the Course Schedule as well as the Supersite. All these assignments are to be done online at www.vhlcentral.com. You will see these activities display next to their due dates in your student dashboard. Simply click “start” and you will be taken through the assignments in the appropriate order and be shown teaching tutorials first. This website requires certain computer settings, browser settings/versions, etc. Late assignments will receive a 10% per day deduction. I will drop your lowest chapter of homework. DO NOT SAVE THE SET OF ACTIVITES FOR THE DUE DATE. There are too many to complete in one day. It is your responsibility to pace yourself and work incrementally. It is also best for foreign language retention to work a little each day. There will be a time estimate for each due date. This is an average. Some students will need more time and some less.
Some activities offer full credit for completion (Credit HW) and some are graded for accuracy (Graded HW). Both kinds are included in your assignments grade. You can view the Calendar in the Supersite to see which are which. The system will give you guided feedback on fill-in-the blank responses. It will show you which portions of your answer are incorrect to help you improve your score at each attempt. If your own computer is not functioning, you may use an open computer lab for free at any campus.
