Assignment #3: Peer Review Guidelines for Discussion on Best Practices
Please refer to the Peer Review Guidelines provided by the University Writing Center for tips on how to communicate effectively during the peer review process. Below you will see the prompts for the Best Practices section of the paper (in blue) followed by some questions to help you give specific feedback to your peer.
Questions/notes for the peer review:
1) Does the student’s paper analyze current practice models that address the problem?
i) What are the years of the studies being used?
ii) Does the paper analyze the models, by looking critically at pieces of the model or does the paper mainly communicate what the model is intended to do without critique?
(1) In any critique or analysis of the models, does the student use source material to assist with the critique? * (see point 3 below)
(2) If the student is simply offering an opinion, see if there is a way to change the opinion into a well worded question. (Point out or highlight any areas that you see as opinion without support from research and suggest possible questions instead of opinions).
2) Have the key vulnerable populations affected by this problem suggested solutions?
a) Does the paper include evidence that the models have been built with input from the impacted population?
1. What examples do you see of input from the population?
b) If not,
1. Does the paper include a question or note that indicates that the participants could be more involved in the evaluation of it?
a. Note here how the writer has commented on the population’s involvement in the model:
3) *Find at least 2 sources from the literature that discuss best practice models addressing the social problem & analyze their efficacy.
a) These sources should assist in the critique of the models or in discussing their efficacy/value. (Sometimes the systematic review or meta-analysis studies can assist in giving credibility because they look at a lot of data and a lot of studies.)
b) What ideas did the author use to critique the model (s)?
c) Name the authors the writer used to support the critique of the best practices:
d) Examples from actual agencies or from programs are also acceptable in addition to the research.
(1) Does the paper show an example that helps the reader clearly understand how the model/intervention works? (meaning, can the reader understand it simply?)
(2) If there are examples from an agency or program, are they clearly cited?
4) Include questions that arise & research that indicates improvements or combinations of models to better address the issue.
a. Does the paper name the gaps in these models? [These gaps will likely be the key to any new recommendations in the later section of the paper.]
b. Name the examples the writer used to show gaps in the models:
5) Identify practice examples at the micro, mezzo, & macro levels of the problem.
i) Often students forget one of the levels in this section; as a reader, can you clearly see the way this problem has been addressed—indicate what the author said at each level:
(1) directly at the micro level?
(2) Administratively or in terms of regulatory actions at the mezzo?
(3) Politically or in terms of advocacy and funding or public perception at the macro?
8. Finally, just discuss what you liked, what was clear, and what some of your questions are? Help your peer write a clear section that is informative and well researched.
