1) What is motivational interviewing?
Motivational interviewing is a collaborative, person-centered, guiding method designed to elicit and strengthen motivation for change.
2) Why is it an important, best practice skill for social work?
MI is important because it gives a client the ability to identify the thoughts and feelings that motivate unhealthy or unpleasant behaviors. Additionally, it helps the client develop new thought patterns that make changing behaviors easier or even possible.

C) What is the difference between change talk and sustain talk?
Change talk and sustain talk are diametrically opposed. Speaking about changing something is known as "change talk," while maintaining a pattern of behavior without changing it is known as "sustain talk."
D) Can motivational interviewing be used to avoid making assumptions about clients and improve social workers’ cultural competence and cultural humility?
In a variety of settings and with clients of all genders, ages, races, and ethnicities, MI can be used to successfully reduce or eliminate their substance use and other health-risk behaviors.
E) What are harm reduction strategies and why are they important to use when working with clients?
1. Engage and support individual regardless of whether or not they are actively seeking recovery
2. Treat individual as the expert in their life in the leader in the process of reducing harm
3. Acknowledge the positive effect of reducing use
4. Remember that change is not linear
5. Support all pathways to recovery
It is beneficial for social workers to place an emphasis on interacting directly with drug users in order to prevent overdoses and the spread of infectious diseases, enhance the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of those they serve, and provide low-threshold access points for medical care and treatment for substance use disorders.
