Module 2 Discussion 1:

Have you ever watched or participated in a debate? Typically both sides in a debate are very passionate about their viewpoints. Have you ever taken a moment to try to understand what sources or evidence have helped the different sides formulate their thinking? Our views and opinions are formed by different experiences and perspectives. To be thorough in your research and achieve depth of understanding of a topic, you need to understand the varying perspectives of the debate. Different types of sources bring differing perspectives. From one type of source, you may understand the general public's viewpoints on a topic, while from another type of source, you may find more in-depth expert research on a topic. These perspectives are all valuable in understanding the complexity of an issue.

Now it is your chance to explore all the different viewpoints on assigned topics. In this discussion you will complete a scavenger hunt of sources, and then consider each source's value to your own research.  

You should spend approximately 3 hours on this assignment.

Instructions

1. Choose the topic you wish to research for Modules 2 and 3. You may choose from the following topics: child labor, human trafficking, climate change and energy policy, OPEC, or space exploration. You will research this topic for all of the assignments and discussions in Modules 2 and 3.

2. Learn the  difference between scholarly and popular articles .

3. Access the CCCOnline Library Databases to begin searching for sources. Try beginning your search in Academic Search Complete, as it is the widest searching, most complete database. However, you can search the more narrowly focused databases if you wish. For this discussion you will also need to search the internet for some sources, but please use the databases for as many as possible.

4. Please keep in mind that the rule of thumb for scholarly research is that it should have been done within the past five years to be considered "current." When you search, filter for publication date 2017 - 2022. Books in print can be older but no more than ten years.

5. Your goal is to find a wide variety of perspectives on your topic. For this discussion, you should find and read:

· One book (You may skim the book, finding the most important ideas presented.)

· One popular press article (A popular press article is one that is printed in a periodical intended for a general audience, such as Time, Newsweek, and National Geographic.)

· Two scholarly articles (A scholarly article is one that is printed in a journal intended for a specific, expert audience; one of these articles should come from a peer-reviewed journal.)

· One news source

· One internet source

· One non-traditional source (think about films, podcasts, TED Talks, etc.)

6. Think: What voice do you hear in each of the sources you have found? Whose perspective does that voice represent? What does that voice add to your understanding of the larger conversation? Are some voices (sources) more credible than others? Are some voices more important than others?

7. Write: In your initial post, you should list the sources' titles, authors, periodical titles, and publish dates as appropriate to each source. Consider the rhetorical situation for each source (think specifically about the audience and purpose), and discuss how the source adds to your deeper understanding of the conversation. What is the research value of each of these types of sources?  

8. Post one original post, and reply to at least two of your classmates. In your replies to peers, compare your valuations on the different perspectives. Discuss why you value one type of source over another, and try to help one another see the importance of each type of voice. Try to further the discussion in your replies by asking thoughtful questions, adding interesting information, or connecting your reply to the material we are discussing.

9. Don't forget that your initial posting is due by the date listed in the Course Schedule. Please post over several days. Points will be lost if you post on only one day of the module.

The author of this book, Paul Bergman, discuss what human trafficking is, published in 2021. This book is intended for individuals studying criminal law. The author also discusses an actual police sting that resulted in 86 arrests (187). Bergman informs readers of what to look out for, what to avoid, and ways to seek help regarding human trafficking. This book was also published in 2021, which would make the information resent and therefore, a reliable source.

This People Magazine article published in 2022, relays the story of one individual and her personal struggle with overcoming being trafficked. This article is intended for all audiences. This source is not only good because it is very recent, but it also provides a real-life situation for one individual who was trafficked herself.

This peer reviewed study published in 2021 in the International Social Science Review, is aimed at researchers and “examines the overlap between the U.S. immigration system and human trafficking” (Pedron 2021). The author explains the differences between trafficking and smuggling and how they could intertwine. This article also discusses how current policies regarding the U.S. border are both creating and slowing down both smuggling and trafficking. This paper may be useful for my research because it addresses a different side to trafficking such as human smuggling.

This scholarly article published in 2020, discusses trafficking between the U.S. borders and Mexico specifically. The authors point out how easy human trafficking is between Mexico and Texas. The authors also provide additional information on several types of trafficking. This article is a recent, scholarly, and provided information regarding human trafficking and the issues between the U.S. borders and Mexico.

This news media is for the public published in 2022. This article explains how The U.S. Department of Labor has allocated $14 million towards the fight against “child labor, forced labor, and human trafficking” (2022). This news media source is both recent and reveals several statistics when it comes to human trafficking in men, women, and children.

This source was made available through federal grants to stop and/or slow human trafficking, educate on what human trafficking is, and help victims of human trafficking. This website provided several experiences of victims, education on what to look out for, hotlines, blogs, and many how one can help human trafficking. This council starts here in Colorado which is beneficial to my research since that is where I am from.

In this podcast posted in 2022, Melissa Moore interviews Maria Trujillo who discusses the unusual ways an individual could be trafficked right here in the state of Colorado. Trujillo explains the misunderstandings many people have when it comes to trafficking as well as how an individual can seek help. This podcast is useful because it brings the issue of human trafficking to the front door, in my home state of Colorado.

Liam Hooper goes back into trying to resolve depression through traditional ways other than medication. This book is intended for those who are studying mental illnesses (psychology). Liam Hooper also recognizes the common symptoms and how a lot of people, who experience depression aren’t a monolithic experience. He sees that many of the treatments for people who experience depression don’t usually have it resolved and how treatment can be expanded. Also expands into how the immune system and depression coexist and work with each other.

Lifestyle magazine, Prevention releases an article about health and wellness of the myths of depression. Intended or people trying to understand depression or how to overcome it themselves. It socially recognizes how depression isn’t its stereotypical counterparts and how it’s not as socially or easily recognizable.

Indian Journal of Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy released a study from October 2021 about how common depression is in different clinical conditions (back pain, neck pain, stroke). This research was directed to doctors and other researchers. This study helped understand how a lot of physical illnesses and injuries can result in mental ones over time and how it can affect the patient heavily through more severe symptoms in India.

Another peer-reviewed study explains how depression and anxiety coincide within students in their educational lives from the International Journal of Mental Health & Addiction in December 2021. This study finalized how many of the students' emotional intelligence was extremely high in receiving depression and/or anxiety due to stress and subsiding their own mental health for their education. This article in reach for other doctors and researchers claim that childhood and trauma can play a big role in their education before they even start (Zhao). Wants to promote more mental health resources for children.
