ENGL 1120/1121: Source Reading Chart
Use this chart to summarize and assess your sources for the research paper. For each source, provide answers in each column; these can be written in full sentences, short notes, or phrases. The final paper requires at least 4 sources, so a complete chart, ready to turn in by the deadline (see syllabus) for a grade, must have at least that many rows filled in, but space has been provided for up to 10 sources.

Summary: Write a brief 50- to 100-word summary of the source.
Write these answers in full sentences. |
Source Type: What type of source is this? Is it scholarly, news, or popular? Is it an article, book, webpage, etc.? |
Authority: What are the author’s credentials in terms of knowledge, academic prep, or prof. experience? |
Evidence: Summarize what kinds of or types of evidence are used to support the author’s ideas. |
Currency: How current is the information for the topic? When was it published? If it’s not recent, is that OK? |
Utility: How do you foresee using this source in your paper? How much will you use it, how, for what purpose, etc.? |
