Designing Team and Team Identity
1. Building an effective team requires a great deal of efforts and initial study depending on the nature and type of the project. Manager plays a pivotal role in building team right from the start and certain measures needs to be undertaken by the managers in order to build an effective team. There have been tremendous changes in the environment, demands and the technology and Organizations have to remain competitive in the Market to gain the competitive edge. Hence, designing an effective team is very crucial as a team will help to achieve Organizational goals. Building an effective team is one of the primary responsibilities of the Manager.
Manager must design a team based on the tasks and selecting right candidates for right tasks and maintain the relationship between them. He needs to identify key characteristics such as functions of the team, nature of the tasks performed and the challenges they may face depending on the nature of the project. These characteristics may differ based on the nature or the category of the project. There should be a proper balance of mix of different styles and expertise in skills which will address the issues and challenges faced by the team. Building a right team is extremely important with each person having their own expertise and able to collaborate with others to work towards common goal. An innovative team culture should be facilitated which will bring together people of different background and are willing to create and contribute towards the team. A diverse set of people will have different perspective which will prove effective towards successful team. (Mealiea, L., & Baltazar, R. ,2005)
2. Effectiveness of a team is greatly affected by the members of the team and their ability to work with each other with a shared vision and working towards a common goal. A Team Identity can be termed as a process in which the members of the team identify themselves as a part of the group with a sense of unity and work towards the common future. Team Identity promotes a collective perception that improves relationship between the employees and align everyone around common team issues. The greater the team identity, the more effective is the team.
I believe we feel attached to only certain groups only as we feel comfortable around them. When we work with a group of people, we get to know their values and morals and we build a bond over time. Interacting with them on a regular basis add to the comfort. Cognitive component is one of the key elements of Team Identity which is built over a period of time.
