Case Study
A 79-year-old American Hispanic male patient present to the facility with the complaint of being moody al the time.
Complaints of having lost hope in life and is always feeling worthless.
He claims to be the cause of death to his 13-year-old grandson who drown in the river.
He became more irritable and it was hard to help him sit down as he kept on blaming himself for the unfortunate events in his family.
The communication with the patient was somehow complicated since he could not speak English clearly since most of the time he explained his situation in an Hispanic language.
A translator was called but the patient remain quite since he felt uncomfortable when another healthcare provider was introduced and only trusted me.

One of the social work skill that was demonstrated during the interaction was the communication. The role of communication was valued since the patient was communicated to when he first presented himself and was informed that he would be helped with his condition. An empathy was shown to the patient and this was demonstrated by seeking further help from the translator to help in understanding what was being communicated by the patient. He was helped to sit down while he became uncontrollable. The critical thinking was demonstrated when the aspect or the role of cultural competency was demonstrated by calling the translator to help in understanding the language. Active listening was demonstrated by allowing the patient to share his story and how the problem began. Patience was also demonstrated when the patient became disturbance. He was given time to cool down before continuing with the assessment.

One of the social work skill not demonstrated in the agency was the cultural competency. In this case, it was hard to understand the language being spoken by the client. I had to seek help from the fellow colleague who acted as an translator. The value and ethics was not demonstrated since the privacy of the patient was not observed. The patient became scared and was not ready to talk further once the translator was introduced.

It also shows the necessary social skills required to be a successful social worker for example cultural competency to overcome issues associated with language barriers. It also helps in knowing the types of services being offered in social work. It reveals about the type of clients that should be expected in seeking the services. It also reveals about the approaches that must be taken to promote the engagement with the clients for example through promoting of trust level.
