Jake is a Caucasian male married with two children. Jake is an Iraq war veteran that suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Jake has difficulty sleeping, heart palpitations, and moodiness (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014). Jake was also experiencing nightmares and nervousness as he often felt he was on the edge. Jake would drink heavily to provide him some relief.
The tools used to help Jake address his PTSD was individual counseling and group therapy. Jake was also recommended to attend AA meetings and a referral was made for him to receive couples counseling with his wife. Jake would drink as a distraction for what he was feeling, so he could have some relief. Looking for other ways to distract him would be picking up some hobbies or becoming involved in activities he once loved would be another approach to helping him relieve stress. Family counseling will be another approach as this would help build a positive relationship with his sons. Psychotherapy is an approach that works specifically for veterans who suffered from trauma. Brief Eclectic Psychotherapy practices relaxation skills, recall details of the traumatic memory, reframe negative thoughts about the trauma, write a letter about the traumatic event, and hold a farewell ritual to leave trauma in the past (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2017). This approach would help Jake as he has difficulty talking about the trauma. The brief eclectic psychotherapy would help Jake learn specific skills and techniques to use when he is experiencing negative emotions, and this therapy would allow Jake to write down his thoughts which could help him address the stress Jake is experiencing.

The Levy family(Jake and Shari) have begun to address several issues that have been identified due to Jake attending counseling at the Local Veterans Administration. Jake is an Iraq veteran who has sustained injuries and suffers from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and since returning home he has distanced himself from his children and his wife and uses alcohol on a regular basis to self medicate which has effected his relationships with them.
The social worker utilized "problem-solving techniques, gathered information, assessed the situation, and developed a plan of action using the strengths perspective to show Jake that he had the ability and motivation to change his situation. Another segment that was introduced was couples counseling to assist Sheri in understanding Jake’s diagnosis. Utilizing the systems perspective was used in assessing what resources and services Jake needed and a variety of techniques to address his trauma symptoms, journaling, deep breathing, and guided meditation (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014)."
Other skills that may be utilized in this scenario may be evidence-based practices can be integrated into this situation by looking at previous research studies that relate to this client situation such as:
"Psychopharmacology- Psychotropic medications are commonly used for persons with PTSD. Pharmacotherapy is less time-intensive than psychotherapy, can be administered by non-mental health professionals, and is much easier to continue in an active combat theater than talk therapy.
Prolonged Exposure- PE is an approach intended to reduce PTSD through a modification of the memory structures underlying emotions such as the ubiquitous fear found in PTSD. It is a manualized treatment typically consisting of 8-15 weekly 90-minute sessions. The main components of PE include the imaginal revisiting of the clients' traumatic memories (i.e., imaginal exposure), recounting them aloud and discussing the experience immediately after the recounting (termed “processing”) and in vivo exposure to safe, but trauma-related situations that the client fears and avoids. PE also includes psycho-education and training in slowed breathing techniques.
Cognitive Processing Therapy shares many of the emblematic components of CBT (e.g., challenging automatic thoughts) and is typically administered in a 12-session format. Self-blame is a particular treatment focus. CPT also contains an exposure component, but one quite different from PE. Specifically, clients are instructed to write about their traumatic events in detail (sensory memories, thoughts, and feelings), read their accounts to themselves daily, and read them aloud during sessions. Clinicians assist clients in labeling feelings and working through “stuck points” in the narratives (Sharpless abd Barber, 2011)."

In evaluating the Levy case video, I chose to discuss the Lewis Coser conflict theory. I apply this theory to the Levy case because of the text "Coser noted that conflict serves an integrative or "binding" function, as conflict with others unifies the group and sharpens "identity and boundary lines." In addition, conflict provides a "safety valve" to "drain off hostile and oppressive sentiments" (1956, p. 48). Conflict also helps to define the nature and structure of relationships between conflicting parties. The causes of conflict are many and may include closeness of relationships, a need for group cohesion, or a need to define the group structure. These needs may, at times, lead to a "search for enemies" to strengthen social cohesion"(Robbins, Chatterjee, Canda, 2012, pg. 73). The client was struggling with the conflict of not ending his friend's life who was dying and in a lot of pain. He was faced with not only seeing his friend die but also not pulling the trigger to end the suffering. He was and still is facing many conflicts from the attack.
As a social worker, he is clearly facing a lot of issues. He is dealing with a lot of trauma. I would suggest support groups for military personnel, relaxation and breathing exercise and locating a therapist who specialize in PTSD.

In the case of the Levy Family, I chose cognitive-behavioral therapy. "Behaviorism focuses on learning and the way which behavior is shaped by its antecedents conditions and consequences, rejecting mentalistic constructs such as mind, consciousness, and other internal processes." (Robbins, Chatterjee & Canda, 2012) The trauma that took place in Iraq, Jake began to have nightmares of not helping his platoon Sergeant and not sleeping at all. Jake use alcohol as a coping mechanism to stop the nightmares which cause problems in his marriage. Jake is dealing with a lot of issues since his tour in Iraq, he is not coping very well, and doesn't really understands what's going on.
As a social worker, it seems that Jake is experiencing systems of PTSD. As a social worker, I would explain to Jake what PTSD is and provide literature to help explain. Since Jake is a veteran, I would provide him resources with a therapist from the local VA(Veterans Administration) who would be able to help him more, provide medications and his counseling. If all goes well with that services maybe Jake will be ready for group therapy. I will also provide information to Jake's wife Sher, to help her understand what he is going through and maybe suggest they go through marriage counseling all which is provided through the VA free of charge.
