Week 5: Feminist Theory

As a profession, social work is committed to the uniqueness of every individual, within his or her social situation. Feminist theory takes into account the role of gender and the historical lack of power experienced by women in society. Feminism and social work share a commitment to the unique nature and essential dignity of all people. Feminist social workers emphasize the collaborative relationship between the social worker and the client and place an emphasis on equality and empowerment of women in society.

This week, you compare how various feminist theories inform social work practice, and you apply feminist theories to a family video case study. You also analyze your personal understanding of the influences that feminist theories have on women’s roles in society and examine the relationships between feminist theory and social work practice.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

· Compare how feminist theories inform social work practice

· Apply social work skills related to feminist theories in social work case study

· Analyze personal understanding of the influences feminist theories have on women’s roles in society

· Apply social work skills related to feminist theory and social work practice in a social work case study

Bradley Family Episode 6 Program Transcript FEMALE SPEAKER: How long have you been a lawyer? MALE SPEAKER: 10 years. I've been representing young women at Teens First about the last two years. FEMALE SPEAKER: I've never had a lawyer before. MALE SPEAKER: Well I'm glad to be working with you. FEMALE SPEAKER: It is always this awful? MALE SPEAKER: What do you mean? Did something happen? FEMALE SPEAKER: No. The people here treat me great. MALE SPEAKER: What's wrong then? FEMALE SPEAKER: Well the people here, like you, you listen to me and say all this isn't my fault. But then when we were in court the police, those other lawyers, they may be sound like kind of horrible person. MALE SPEAKER: Listen to me, Tiffany, you're the victim here, not a criminal. But under the current law, even though you're only 16, you're still seen as someone who's committed the crime of prostitution, regardless of the fact that others exploited you and put you in that position. FEMALE SPEAKER: It just doesn't seem fair. MALE SPEAKER: I promise that I will do my very best in court to emphasize the circumstances that helped get you in this trouble. FEMALE SPEAKER: They could all go to hell. MALE SPEAKER: I totally understand your anger. But it's important that you always show respect to the police in the court always. It's the law. No matter how unjust it may be. Do you understand? FEMALE SPEAKER: Yes. MALE SPEAKER: Good. FEMALE SPEAKER: Did you notice how most of them saying those nasty things in court about me were men? ©2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 1 Bradley Family Episode 6 Bradley Family Episode 6 Additional Content Attribution MUSIC: Music by Clean Cuts Original Art and Photography

Discussion Title: Women’s Roles, Feminist Theory, and Social Work Practice

Feminism contributed to a vast number of changes in women’s lives over several decades. From the kitchen to the boardroom and back again if women choose, feminism has empowered women to examine how they want to live in this world and encouraged them to seek that life. Despite this progress, there are frequent events that still challenge women’s roles in society. What is your understanding of women’s roles in society? How might your biases and your research into feminist theory influence your work as a social worker?

For the Discussion, review this week’s resources. Search reputable sources, including the Walden Library and the Internet, in order to select an article that focuses on a current event involving the role of women in society. Then, select a feminist theory from this week’s reading and reflect on how it relates to social work practice. Think about how that has influenced your understanding of women’s roles in society and whether your understanding has changed as a result of your research. Finally, think about how the selected feminist theory and your understanding of women’s roles might inform your work with Tiffani in the Bradley Family video case.

Note to Students:  Reputable sources include scholarly peer-reviewed journals, other scholarly texts, and websites hosted by educational institutions (.edu) and reputable organizations (.org).

Week 6: Theories of Culture

The idea of adapting to new cultures is not an easy process in most societies. In fact, there are many historical examples of culture clashes that have led to violence or discrimination, both for those who chose to settle in a new land and for those who found their land inhabited by newcomers. For more than a century, the profession of social work has grown, evolved, and adapted to address the needs of an increasingly diverse population. Social workers continue to emphasize the importance of acknowledging and honoring their client’s culture. How might understanding theories of culture assist social workers in their work with clients?

This week, you analyze the relevance of racial and ethnic identities in social work practice and how theories of culture might also be an influence. You also analyze strategies for addressing bicultural socialization needs in social work practice.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

· Apply social work skills related to the dual perspective model in a social work case study

· Analyze relevance of racial and ethnic identities in a social work case study

· Analyze cultural perception in a social work case study

· Analyze intergroup competence in a social work case study

· Apply social work skills related to bicultural socialization in social work practice

· Analyze the role of cultural adaptation in the development of bicultural identity

· Analyze the development of cultural adaptation

· Analyze influences of cultural adaptation on social work practice

· Analyze influences of integrative theories on social work practice

· Analyze congruence between integrative theories and social work ethics and values

Petrakis Family Episode 1 Program Transcript FEMALE SPEAKER: OK, Mrs. Petrakis, what I'd like to do is ask you a few questions just so I get a good understanding of what's going on. First, let's start with what brings you here today. HELEN PETRAKIS: [LAUGHS] What brings me here? Let's get down to business. I will tell you what's going on. My husband and I are Greek. Petrakis, big surprise, right? We're Greek Orthodox. You know what that means? It means tradition and family the old fashioned way. Nothing is more important than family, nothing. Young people today, they don't seem to care so much. For me, it's everything to my last breath. FEMALE SPEAKER: Yes, but-- HELEN PETRAKIS: So that means I take care of my family, not just my husband, my children, too. We have three. There's Alek, he's 27, and Dimitra, she's 23, and Athena, 18. They all live at home, and so I take care of all of them. A mother's work is never done. FEMALE SPEAKER: Mrs. Petrakis-- HELEN PETRAKIS: Oh no, no. Call me Helen, please. Let me finish. So is it all too much for me? Of course it is. I also work full time at the hospital, billing department. [LAUGHS] You have no idea how much that place overcharges. Let me tell you. Don't get sick at a hospital. They will bleed your money. Anyway, I'm already feeling overwhelmed, like a crazy person. Sometimes I find myself crying for no reason. And now my mother-in-law's got dementia and I'm running over to her place every chance I get to look after her, too. FEMALE SPEAKER: Wow. You certainly have your hands full. May I ask-- HELEN PETRAKIS: Magda. FEMALE SPEAKER: Excuse me? HELEN PETRAKIS: Oh, that's my mother-in-law's name. She's 81. But dementia is not the worst of it. She fell in her apartment and broke her hip, and how she can't go out. So I'm running over there every chance I get to make sure she has what she needs. And then last night, I had a thought. Alek, my 27-year-old. He's not working right now. What if he moved in with grandma and helped take care of her? That way, I ©2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 1 Petrakis Family Episode 1 can relax a bit, know she's OK, and not be going out of my mind every day like a crazy person. I mean, what do you think? Grandson gets to know his grandmother a little bit, gives his mom a break. It's a good solution, right? Right? FEMALE SPEAKER: Yes. Yes, it sounds real good. Discussion Title: Cultural Perceptions, Intergroup Competence and the Dual Perspective Model

Cultural identities, such as race and ethnicity, religious persuasion, sexual orientation, and ability, and the cultural perception of these identities often influence individuals’ interactions with others in society. When cultures differ, bicultural socialization represents an individual’s ability to integrate positive aspects of his or her culture with the prevailing societal culture. Think back to the systems theories you examined earlier in the course. How might these identities affect an individual’s interactions within the family or immediate community system, or what the dual perspective model refers to as the nurturing system? Would these identities affect an individual’s interactions within the larger social system that includes commercial, political, economic, and educational subsystems or what the dual perspective model refers to as the sustaining system? The answers to these questions exist in your ability to understand your clients’ experiences and your understanding of the interconnection that exists among your client’s cultural identities, otherwise referred to as level of intergroup competence.

For this Discussion, review this week’s resources, including the Petrakis Family video case. Consider the cultural influences depicted in the video and how Helen and the intern’s ethnic and racial identities might be relevant to their interaction. Then, think about any video evidence of the intern’s perception of Helen’s culture and how it might compare to the intern’s level of intergroup competence. Finally, reflect on how the intern might apply the dual perspective model in the intern’s approach to Helen.

Assignment Title: Modes of Cultural Adaptation and Social Work Practice

How do you adapt to a new society? Is it a matter of completely adapting to the cultural practices of the new society at the expense of your own culture? Or do you remain steadfast in your personal culture to the detriment of your social experience in that new society? Maybe, you attempt to find a balance by developing a bicultural identity that respects both your personal culture and that of your new society. What might be the impact for clients and the new society with each of these options? How do you, as a social worker, help your clients with the cultural adaptation process without losing their personal cultural identity and without disrespecting the culture of the new society?

For this assignment, consider the role that cultural adaptation plays in the development of bicultural identity. Then, think about how family systems, peer groups, communities, organizations, and institutions influence the development of different modes of cultural adaptation (traditional, marginal, assimilation, and bicultural) and why these influences might be important to social work practice.

Assignment Title: Modes of Cultural Adaptation and Social Work Practice

3. Assignment (4- to 6-page, APA-format paper):

Your paper should include:

· An explanation of the role cultural adaptation has in the development of bicultural identity

· An explanation of how family, peer groups, communities, organizations, and institutions influence the development of different modes of cultural adaptation (traditional, marginal, assimilation, and bicultural)

· An explanation of why these influences of cultural adaptation might be important to social work practice
