Women are often perceived a certain way within our society. These images differ between various cultures. Women in positions of power are also stigmatized and constantly struggle in the fight for gender equality. According to Hatton (2013), " Both women and men, they maintain, are highly sexualized in popular media. At the same time, scholars have examined the sexualization of women as part of a broader cultural ‘backlash’ against the gains of second-wave feminism and women’s increasing power in society" (p. 65). This study looks at the progression of media representations of power females over time. There is a lot of pressure for women of power to behave and look a certain way.
I chose to focus on the Relational-Cultural theory for this discussion. This theory centers on the development of women while being influenced by the cultural conformities. "Included within this theory is the understanding of how relationships occur within particular cultural contexts such as the devaluation of people due to their gender, race, class, and sexual orientation. Thus, the theory accounts for how discrimination, stereotyping, unearned advantage and privilege impact people’s sense of connection and disconnection. Therefore, another central tenet is that people grow (or fail to grow) in relationships that exist within a cultural context" (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012, p. 125). This thepry can help influence our understanding of how culture, gender, race, class, and sexual orientation play a role in the different ways a woman experiences feminism.
In Tiffani's case, she is feeling the backlash of societal views on women. She was put in a position of prostitution at her young age. The men in the court room look at her in a negative light because of this. They don't see as a victim in her circumstances but rather a prostitute who broke the law. This is noticed by Tiffani and as a result, she finds herself feeling negative about her current situation. The next step to take with her would be to conduct a strengths-based approach to shed light on her positive attributes and actions. This will help her to feel more confident and take her upcoming challenges head on.

Justine,
I found your selection of the theory Relational-Cultural theory a great choice. Learning and educating ourselves will help bring tolerance and understanding to people. Keeping an open mind is powerful as social workers. Developing our listening and analytical skills will only better ourselves but also our clients. Another theory to consider is "Theories of gender difference focus on psychological and relational differences in the way women and men experience both the world and themselves. Basic values, interests, ways of knowing, identity construction, and relational interactions are seen as distinctive from those of men"(Robbins, Susan P., Chatterjee, Edward Canda, 2012, pg. 118). Another great theory to apply while working with clients.

Depression is a mental illness that many may experience at one point in their life. There is a difference between being depressed and being chronically depressed. Depression can be hard to observe in others at times due to their ability to maintain a happy outward appearance. For adults they may not want to admit to being depressed as it can be seen as being weak. The Beck Depression Inventory is a depression scale that is used for adults to help assess depression (Congress, 2013). This scale is a self administered test that consist of 21 items that can be rated from 0-3. The examiner then adds up the totals of the scale to help examine the level of depression the person has based on their answers (Congress, 2013). In the case of Miranda we could use the Beck Depression Inventory during her assessment to help to better understand if her depression is normal, mild or moderate to severe (Congress, 2013). Miranda could fill out the test while waiting for her assessment with the social worker to save time while with the social worker if she comes in with the complaint of depression. If the client is not aware of their depression the scale could be administered later after the assessment. To better assess Miranda's depression I would ask her questions about her social living including her friends, activities she is involved in outside of work and family. This would give me an idea of what she does in her spare time, if she is isolating this can help me to better diagnose her depression. Some red flags that I would look for when working with someone like Miranda would be thoughts of self harm or significant helplessness. If I noticed these issues I would look more into the suicide risk for that client and may include a scale such as the Scale for Suicide ideation to help rate the risk for that person. It can be hard to assess the risk of a person if you are not experienced. I have been in a crisis assessment before with my internship and it was very interesting, a person who is not trained in this may want to send every person to the hospital due to their inability to correctly assess them. During the assessment I sat through I knew that the girl would be okay to go home with a safety plan. I know that this will take much practice over time if I chose to stay in the mental health field.

Miranda is a 35-year-old female who sought counseling after experiencing emotions of anxiety and depression. Due to boundary violations, she has a heavier than normal workload. This also contributes to her mood, Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, S. (2014a). Miranda needs an assessment such as the Beck Depression Inventory, to measure her symptoms of depression, Congress (2013).
The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) is considered to be the most widely used scale to evaluate depression. User age ranges from 13-80 years, and can be done in a little as five minutes. The BDI can either be verbally given by an administrator, or via self-administered, Congress (2013). My goal in offering the BDI as an assessment tool for Miranda would be to determine the level of her depressive mood, Congress (2013).
A question I would most like to ask Miranda is how long has she been feeling depressed or anxious. I would also like to know if she has had cycles of feeling like this in the past. If so, how long did they last, and what did she do about it? I would also be looking at her risk for suicide.
Suicide is a major public health crisis, with someone dying every 15 minutes, Posner (2015). Although BDI can be an indicator of suicidal ideations, an additional tool is the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). Available in 114 country-specific languages, this assessment can be administered by people helpers, to include clergy. These types of assessments can be used to know where and how to help Miranda.
