1. A description of the conflict theory that best applies to the case study you selected
In the case of Roy, Roy is having conflicts with his ex-wife and has resulted into him becoming hostile with her. Due to Roy hostile behaviors, he has been fired from his job, divorced, gained legal issues, lost custody rights and only have supervised visitation rights with his children, and must attend groups for batter’s (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014). Roy blames all his issues on his problems with his ex-wife. After reading this case, I believe that the Lewis Coser: The Functions of Conflict is the best theory that applies to this case. The Lewis Coser: The Functions of Conflict theories looks at “conflict as a transaction between people” (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012, pg.73). This case shows that there is a conflict between to ex-spouses. Furthermore, this theory discusses how conflict may have realistic or unrealistic conflict. For this case, the unrealistic conflict reflects the type of conflict Roy is having with Melissa, which has turned into hostility, inequality, and potential violence (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012).
Then explain what social work skills you might use to apply that theory and explain why it is appropriate for the case you selected.
To apply this theory, I would utilize assessments and interventions that provides information regarding conflicts (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012). The assessments can help me understand how the client sees conflicts, understand conflicts, how often he or she engages in conflict, etc. The interventions can allow the client to learn how he or she can have healthy conflicts versus hostile, violent, and aggressive conflicts. With this case, assessment and interventions can help Roy become aware of how him having conflicts are effecting his lively hood and the interventions can help him change how he engage, handle, and cope with conflicts. Connecting Roy to other resources would be another social work skill I would apply. Due to Roy current behaviors in this case, I would connect Roy to anger management classes, substance abuse treatment for the alcohol, conflict resolution groups, family therapy, and parenting classes.

The case I chose to examine was Roy's case notes. Roy has shared that he has multiple conflicts but biggest conflict would be with his ex-wife. I chose the Randal Collins conflict theory to apply to this case. "Argued that people's experiences in "giving and taking orders" lead them to internalize their experiences with dominance and subservience. Their ensuing subjective definitions result in specific outlooks and behaviors that guide their future interactions. In addition to their subjective orientations, they bring to these interactions the material resources that they possess. Those who possess fewer resources are likely to be controlled by others, both materially and ideologically". (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012, pg.72).
Roy discusses how his ex-wife was irresponsible with "his money" (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014). Displaying how he felt his power over her and how he should dictate how the money was spent. He interaction with the facilitator displays his lack of respect or courtesy for anyone but himself. My recommendation would be for Roy to be admitted into a substance abuse program immediately since he has drove multiply times while under the influence. I would discuss his safety and the safety of the community. His substance abuse has negativity affected every aspect of his life and I would discuss these points with him.
With the Randal Collins theory, it is discussed that people's experiences with "giving and taking orders" would apply to this case. Roy clearly does not want to take orders from anyone and his past employment as a law enforcement officer shows that he is used to giving orders. I would want to further explore this area with Roy and see why he only gives orders but cannot receive them even if it is in his best interest.

RE: Discussion - Week 3

The goal in any assessment process is to gather enough information to create a treatment plan. This is no different for a child. To effectively inform the treatment plan, “an evidence-based assessment uses the best available tools and strategies to gather information about the child, the presenting struggle or challenge, and the critical microsystems that child inhabits, such as his or her family, school, and neighborhood” (Woolley, 2013, pg.17).
Gathering information for the purpose of assessment should include not only the adult participants in the child’s life (parents, guardians, teachers, and providers) but also the report of the child. “Research has found that children often report higher rates of severity of social or emotional problems than adult informants” (Woolley, 2013, pg. 18). In the case of depression or anxiety, both being primarily internal struggles, a child could rate their depression and anxiety differently from an adult who is only observing their presentation from the outside. To best serve the child, social workers must identify and apply the best assessment tools and strategies available (Woolley, 2013).
An eco-map provides a quick glance of the structure of the child’s family, social and activity network. By creating an eco-map, a social worker can quickly see how the family relationships are, how many resources are available and whether they are effective or helpful.
Utilizing structured interview instruments and structured surveys for the purpose of assessment of a child helps to organize valid information and weed out the information that is not useful or helpful. While a structured interview of a parent/guardian can inform the social worker of their perceived view of needs for the child, a structured survey can provide the perception of needs from the child’s view.

RE: Discussion - Week 3

When it comes to assessing children and their needs within the social work field, there are many aspects to consider. Assessing children can be difficult for social workers if they are not knowledgeable of different ways to communicate with children during the time of assessment. This is why it is very important for all social workers to use multiple evidence-based tools when communicating with children. This is because we know that children communicate differently based on their environment and mental capability to communicate. For this reason, we as the professional, have to meet them half way when assessing them to help them feel comfortable and no different than the next child based on their level of communicating. One main evidence-based communication tools that is used regularly to assess children is the use of open-ended questioning. This particular communication style focus on allowing individuals to provide a more meaningful explanation to the question that is being asked rather than a basic yes or no answer. Researchers have found that this form of communication allows the social worker to gain more information regarding the social issue at hand so he/she can then receive the information needed to properly formulate the child’s treatment plan based on the present needs (Woolley, 2013).
The use of an eco-map in assessment can be very beneficial and helpful. This particular tool serves as a comprehensive picture of one’s family dynamic and structure. This particular map serves as a quick and basic overview of one’s support system, connection to community resources, social gaps between family members or relationships etc. (McCormick, Stricklin, Nowak, & Rous, 2008). This tool can also be very helpful when creating children’s treatment plan because this allow the social worker to involve as many supportive family members possible to ensure services are rendered as needed. The system that I will account for when assessing a child would be social learning and system theory. Both theories will allow me to further be able to analyze and assess the overall needs of the child rather than the basic needs that have been displayed. For example, the social learning system will allow me to reinforce to the child and family that the child learn through imitation and observation, therefore, it is the family’s responsibility to be great role models for the child based on what is appropriate and what is not appropriate. The system theory system will allow me to observe the child’s behavior on a more general human behavior system rather than family system. This will also allow the child and family to see different ways they can help mitigate the social issue at hand without developing negative behaviors. Once all tools are applied and implemented, we as the social worker can then begin to formulate the child’s treatment plan and begin providing the services needed to get the child on the right track and keeping the child and family there.
