The purpose of this assignment is for you to reflect on the study of sociology and what you have learned this semester. You will choose a specific inequality in society and offer sociological explanations for why it exists and how it impacts society. Imagine that the audience is someone who has never taken a sociology class.

What is an infographic?

An infographic is a visual representation of information or data so as to present a concept or topic clearly and quickly. We observe infographics all around us and your job will be to create one that communicates the sociological research about a given social inequality.

Requirements:

For the infographic, you should use a platform like Piktochart ( https://piktochart.com)[footnoteRef:1] to design an infographic about a specific social inequality. You must include in your infographic: [1: Students have also used other platforms such as “Canva” (https://www.canva.com) and “Venngage” (https://venngage.com). Note that these platforms can occasionally cause difficulties to download/print without paying for the service so make sure you can download the infographic with a free account BEFORE you start.]

3. Detailed overview of an inequality that you are examining in a specific institution (workplace, education, health, etc.)	Through visuals and text, you should offer sociological explanations to EXPLAIN WHY we observe inequalities in this aspect of social life by drawing on sociological concepts, research, and findings we have discussed in class, appear in the textbook and readings, or in reliable sources provided to you (see next page). · Text: Relevant key terms (defined in your own words) to explain the multiple causes and dimensions of the social inequality. You must develop these explanations in your own words. · Visuals: Photographs, charts, images, and/or artistic depictions to represent the inequality.
4. Reference lists for text and visuals	References should appear at the bottom of your infographic and should be organized into two separate reference lists accordingly: · Text: Class lectures, readings, and/or other articles and data sources (see TCU Online for “How To Cite” document) you consulted to provide the information in your infographic. · You must provide reference information for images (pictures, graphs). This includes the data source, photographer, artist, book, etc. If this information is unavailable, indicate the website link from which you located the image.

Submission Guidelines:

· INFOGRAPHIC SUBMISSION: You must submit your infographic (as a .jpeg, .png, or .pdf) to the Assignment folder via TCU Online by 11:59 pm on Friday, December 10th.

You are welcome to use any sources from your textbook or other readings, including scholarly research articles. The sources below are also accurate sources for recent data as collected by the U.S. government or reliable, randomized surveys administered to the public.

· Provides data about incarceration, capital punishment, probation, court systems. Data includes survey data of inmates in correctional facilities and jails.

Bureau of Labor Statistics ( https://www.bls.gov/data/)

· Provides data about work in the United States, including pay by gender and race and ethnicity (in the “ Earnings” section)

· Provides data about U.S. population and some international data related to demography (fertility, mortality, migration) and education attainment, urbanization, among other issues.

· Provides data about health, including sexual health and behavior.

Pew Research Center ( https://www.pewresearch.org)

· Provides data about social trends, demography, economics, religion, and U.S. politics, among other topics. This includes recent survey data that can be a compelling way to introduce a topic.
