Introduction

Social Work Speaks can be referred to as a reference tool representing the combined thoughts of social workers in each and every field of practice. It can as well help in creation of organizational responses to policy problems, performing policy analysis, as well as working in advocacy coalitions. There are various social issues that, have been addressed by NASW in Social Work Speaks. T, this paper intends to choose racism as a social issue identified in Social Work Speaks and discuss it in details based on personal opinion, NASW’ opinion and reflect on the issue more. Section One: Personal Opinion

The social issue selected is racism. Racism defines the practice of prejudice, discrimination, or even antagonism directed on people based on their membership of a certain racial or ethnic cluster, classically one that is considered as a minority or one that is marginalized. My opinion about racism is that, it is a major social problem in America that affects different several people in various fields and needs to be brought to an end. There are various factors that led to assertion of the aforementioned opinion. One of them is that, the American education structure or system contravenes equitable access as well as opportunities to ethnically plus racially diverse persons. Another reason is based on housing whereby, the marginalized groups in America possess fewer choices on where to stay and also pay expensively for rent charges for less sufficient housing. The health care services as well as employment in American also contribute to the opinion. This is because, the rate of access to health care services for the racially oppressed person in America is low compared to the Caucasian Americans. This. In terms of employment, the racially diverse persons experience economic depression as well as poverty since they are discriminated when it comes to job opportunities. For example black people are always discriminated when it workplaces and as a result the level of poverty in black communities within American states is higher compared to that of the Caucasians. Another reason that contributed to my opinion is that, because I am black, I have experienced several instances of racism whereby I have been discriminated because of my race. For example, I was discriminated during a football team selection in my school because of being black. Additionally, though my parents are qualified for a job, they have always been denied opportunities to work at different places due to their race. Section Two: NASW’s Opinion

The position of NASW on racism is that, it is dedicated to social justice for all and ending racism. NASW considers racism to be a major issue that impacts diverse groups in America, and has since been individualized, institutionalized as well as practiced in schools, workplaces and public places (Austin, Craig, & McInroy, 2016). NASW asserts that, discrimination as well as prejudice aimed at any group is harmful to the social, emotional, as well as economic well-being of the impacted group and of community as a whole.  NASW justifies its position of dedication to social justice for all and ending racism though various measures that, it has put in place (National Association of Social Workers, 2003). For example, the organization has a solid assenting action program that applies to state and chapter management and staff. The organization also encourages for application of programs and regulations intended to create high quality education via a variety of approaches. NASW also backs-up a wide-ranging, multicultural community in which racial, ethnic, as well as class, and sexual origins, and social identities are highly valued and respected and in which there will be no toleration of racism (National Association of Social Workers, 2003). The organization also justifies its position by advocating for labor force regulations that prevent negative effects on workers of marginalized groups. The NASW also encourages social workers to take up actions to stop racism related issues by speaking out and not being silent when one is discriminated at work place or in the community.

Section Three: Personal Reflection

There are various ways through which reading the position statement changed my way of thinking. For instance, it made me realize that, racism in America, racism is deeply ingrained in the nation’s structures, rules, as well as people. Additionally it made me realize that, people should acknowledge that incidents of racism, violence, oppression, as well as discrimination to non-white people occur every time (Vella, 2020). The statement also changed my thinking because it informed me of more consequences and impacts that people from marginalized groups face. For example, the position statement made it clear that, it is through racism that people from marginalized groups, especially children, fail to get equal access to education. From the position statement, I realized that the racially marginalized groups can play a big role in ending racism related problems by speaking out and not just keeping silent. It also enabled me to realize that, racism can be stopped by promoting, advocating for and getting involved in political measures to make sure that there is equal access to the resources, jobs, opportunities, as well as living setting needed to achieve the basic human demands and complete growth.

In an occasion where I disagree with NASW’s policy statement, as a social worker, I will handle the situation by speaking to the superiors or leaders of the organization where I work. This involves presenting my opinions to the leaders about the policy and making proposals on what can be done to make the policy statement better. Additionally, I will conduct a broad research in connection to the policy to determine the key ideas that it presents if they align with my thoughts. In other words, as a social worker, communication is important when faced with a challenge thus I will present my thoughts to the president of NASW. NASW presents various social issues that impact peoples’ wellbeing. Among them is racism. Racism in America has created numerous effects to racially diverse and marginalized groups and the society as a whole. NASW considers racism to be a major issue that impacts diverse groups in America, and has since been individualized, institutionalized as well as practiced in schools, workplaces and public places. For example, children from marginalized groups in America face limited chances when it comes to education; moreover, people of color have also been discriminated in job opportunities and as a result have become poor with reduced life expectancy compared to the Caucasian. Therefore, NASW tries to make an end to the issue by encouraging marginalized people including social workers to take up actions.
