Social Responsibility and Intercultural Competence

Social responsibility includes intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to

engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities.

Intercultural competence includes:

1. Knowledge of your own culture and how it has shaped your world view.

2. Knowledge of significant characteristics of other cultures.

3. Awareness of differences and similarities in cultures.

4. Ability to adjust your actions to successfully interact with someone of another culture.

How do we continuously improve our intercultural competence? First, by understanding that intercultural

competence is complex and it requires growing and maturing in three areas: mind set, heart set, and skill set.

Mind set is the domain where as we learn and engage with others, we recognize similarities and differences. A

growth mind set requires self-awareness and cultural awareness.

Heart set is the domain where we learn to acknowledge, appreciate, and accept cultural differences. There are

six dimensions to your heart set:

1. Self esteem

2. Self-monitoring

3. Empathy

4. Open mindedness

5. Reserved judgment

6. Social relaxation

Skill set involves our intercultural agility; the ability to adjust your actions to successfully interact with

someone of another culture. Specific skills include message skills, appropriate self-disclosure, behavioral

flexibility, and interaction management.

Knowledge of civic responsibility includes:

1. Recognizing your civic responsibility to a specific community.

2. Identifying actions you will take as a citizen to address the pertinent issues within your community.

Engagement in a community includes:

1. Describing effective participation in civic engagement activities.

2. Understanding the purpose and benefits of your engagement in the community.

As you can see, intercultural competence requires:

Social Responsibility Assessment

Assignment Overview: You will watch four short video’s, discuss them with a person/persons of a different culture than you, then answer eight writing prompts to write a reflection essay. The assignment will then be uploaded to eCampus no later than November 20, 2019. Watch the video “Engagement is the Answer! Observe, Think, Listen, Reflect, Question, Respond. What is your mindset, heart set, skill set? Can you see another’s perspective? What can you do? What can we do together?

Assignment detailed instructions: Write a three-page (minimum of 750 words) essay addressing the following eight questions. The paper should be in APA format, double spaced, 12 font, and include references/bibliography on the fourth page. The title page should include only your name, course and section number, and your instructor’s name. Upload your essay on the eCampus course page under “Assessment” no later than November 20th. You will turn in a total of five pages: title page, three-page narrative, bibliography page.

Write eight paragraphs addressing these eight prompts:

Part 1 Intercultural Competence

1. Identify and describe a specific issue of concern to a specific community for the focus of your essay. Choose from DACA and immigration laws, racism, prochoice/prolife, millennials, rape culture, gender equality, same-sex marriage, marijuana laws, religion in schools, human trafficking, white privilege, police brutality, gun control, or another social justice issue.

2. Define culture and cultural competence and discuss how your own culture has shaped your identity and world view related to the issue you chose.

3. Discuss significant characteristics about another culture and how and why they see this issue perhaps differently than you. (put yourself in their shoes, see it from their perspective)

4. Discuss how you have or how you might adjust your actions and communication style to successfully interact with someone from another culture/viewpoint.

Part 2 Engagement with Communities: Social Responsibility

5. Discuss your civic responsibility related to the issue you chose to write about in this essay. 6. Discuss effective participation in civic engagement activities related to this issue. 7. Describe your understanding of the purpose and benefits of civic engagement. 8. If you have engaged in civic activities related to this issue or another issue of importance to you,

describe that experience. What was the purpose? What were the benefits? What did you learn?

Helpful assignment tips: Study the attached grading rubric before you begin writing to be clear on the assignment expectations. You may also choose to visit the Writing Center on campus in W114 to get help writing an exemplary paper. Due Date: Final paper must be uploaded on eCampus by November 20th, under the Assessment Tab in your psychology course main menu. This assignment will be graded using elements of the MVC Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) Writing Rubric and Standards of Critical Thinking. If you are in a face-to-face class on the Mountain View Campus, every classroom has a poster that lists these elements:
