Research Proposal

Abstract

Social cognition research focuses on how our thoughts have an impact on our behaviors as well as emotions. The research provides the society with information regarding the processes as well as provides a solution to the societal issues. Through research impressive contribution regarding the infancy, field is provided. Most of the social cognition research was started in the 1980s after the experience of the cognitive revolution in our societies. Through social thinking, we are able to observe power as well as perils among ourselves. Humans are social animals, and they always strive to be able to make sense of the world they live in, through sharing the perceptions that they have with each other as well as establish a relationship with other humans. Their thoughts may be biased, minimal or even elaborative depending on the demands of the situation as well as the motive power behind the individual at that moment. Human judgment mostly occurs automatically or unconsciously. It is not because the humans are stupid or lazy but it is because these activities are essential that the humans’ mind executes them automatically. People do not need to supervise all the thoughts they have or all their breath because just as their breath their thoughts too, happen automatically and thus more attention should be directed to the complex tasks that we handle. Some theories describe the universal human process, for example, the attributions contribute to creating the individual behavior even though the cultural focus is different due to their diversity. The process of making a judgment is automatic as well as correcting the judgments made. The social cognition research in most situations has been used to facilitate motivation attainment as well as minimizing the negative performance impact due to the stereotype negativity. Researchers have played part in in the contribution of providing enlightenment to the health providers as well as the public regarding the suppressed thoughts as

well as the intrusion thoughts, self-control limitation as well as the benefits of creating a mastery-oriented attribution. The social cognition theories have greatly contributed in establishing treatments for victims suffering from cognitive-behavioral based major depression as well as the post-traumatic stress disorder.

Introduction

Individuals always assess themselves as well as others. People judged others when they are found in a situation that needs them to like when they are choosing their friends, when hiring babysitters, choosing employment referees, while selecting the mates among others issues. Through social cognition the study of the way individuals come to realize themselves, others as well as the social environment around them. In this paper, we are going to discuss how social cognition uses a systematic procedure to study how individuals make decisions as well as assessments regarding other people around them as well as themselves. We are going to focus on the way people interpret, recall as well as attend to a particular information regarding their social environment. Through this focus, we are able to determine an individual motive, moods, culture, recent thoughts, as well as their attitudes and how they affect their judgments as well as their behaviors. We are also going to determine the amount of thought that individuals put kin when it comes to making a judgment as well as whether their conscious thoughts are necessary for their behaviors as well as the judgments they make.

To be able to provide an effective outcome a researcher needs to understand the key social cognition concepts as well as be able to identify the critical issues. Also, a researcher is required to pay a close attention to the behaviors that are frequently observed as well as other issues that describes an individual’s conduct (Gawronski, 2012). Also, a researcher needs to be able to identify a human reliable which is reliable as well as label the behavior in an order that he or she may be able to communicate with other researchers. Where he or she is able to develop the hypothesis for the finding as well as the tests the validity of the hypothesis.

In the research, we are going to focus on the five basic needs that are related to humans as well as the motivations. Then we are going to discuss the major issues which may have interested this research (Sommerville, 2016). The research focuses on studying how individuals developed impressions as well as how people refer to other individual’s behaviors. We are to study how the cognitive ability that the humans have and how it influences their social justice and how individuals view themselves, which is achieved when one understands the five basic needs of the humans.

The five human basic needs that have been proposed motivate an individual behavior towards the feeling of understanding, belonging, managing, self-enhancing as well as having trust for others. Following the research, the basic human needs help individuals to fit better in particular groups hence increasing the chances of surviving which is an essential goal for animals as well as the human species (Donohew, 2015). Following the social psychology research which supports the idea that individuals manipulate their judgments, perceptions, environment as well as behavior by trying to satisfy these basic needs as well as facilitate their survival. Following the research proposal, we will be in a position to understand how humans are social beings and they always crave for a relationship with another human.

The need of belonging is quite a strong need which individuals seek other people to be able to get information as well as follow a particular group even though they are aware that the group or crowd is wrong. For an individual to be able to create a successful relationship he or she is required to control as well as understand the environment around them as well as have trust for other people and also have self-confidence (Roskos-Ewoldsen, 2009). Even though every individual may have these basic needs the expression of the needs may vary due to the cultural diversity. Cultures are often responsible for the promotion of the individual attainments as well as independence for instance in the United States, on the other hand in the Latin America as well as the Asian cultures promote harmonizing groups as well as achievements and individual sacrifices. The belonging need to a group that is meaningful is quite essential to the collectivistic cultures. The Table below will explain the five basic human needs and how they contribute to assisting the individual to make the judgments as well as behavior.

Needs

Description of the need

Finding of the Social psychology

Belong

It is essential for developing a strong as well as stable relationship with people, because it underlies all the motives.

Cultural norms conformity

Understand

It is essential for sharing means as well predictions it promotes the cognitive motive.

Individual attributions

Management

It controls the behavior as well as the outcome it also promotes the cognitive motive.

Believing in a world which is just. Individual basic attribution

Self confidence

It assists an individual to be able to determine his or her self-worth; the need promotes the emotional motive.

An individual being self-serving or self enhancement or self esteem

Trust

It assist an individual to be able to believe in other peoples actions, the need promotes emotional motive

The need is based on optimistic biases

Unconscious as well as conscious thoughts impact the behavior of an individual. The implicit hypothesis regarding the individual conduct may affect the individual perception of control as well as the behavior. People will always wish to have a world that may be controlled in a way that they like for instance an individual may perceive that one has control in scenarios that lack control like a game of chance. Through using magical thinking one is able to fulfill the need for the predictable as well as the controllable world (Augoustinos, 2014). The individual’s beliefs regarding their control source which affects their motivation. Individuals who have an internal control source believe that they effectively make events to happen in the world they are living. On the other hand, individuals with an external control, source tends to believe that the outcomes that appear are often random and they are often independent of the behavioral efforts. Individuals who have an internal control source often are known for trying out challenging tasks after they fail. The actions that people pursue they are often contributed by their unconscious thoughts. Social cognition contributes to the way an individual makes his or her decision as well as the individual behavior.

Methods

In social cognition research experiments are performed to be able to manipulate the casual variable as well as to be able to examine individual behaviors.

Participants

In my research, the individuals that I am going to use as my subject in the experiments will be a group of five individuals who are from different cultural backgrounds. By using participants who are from different cultural backgrounds I will be in a position to identify the role the culture plays in individual behavior as well as judgment (Gorard, 2013). The participants will be randomly picked for the research; this will enable me to be able to thoroughly determine the individual social cognition. The participants should be characterized by the jobs they conduct to be able to determine how social cognition contributes in their daily personal as well as professional life.

Materials

The materials that I will use to be able to determine the impact of social cognition individual ’s decision making as well as the behavior. I may use questionnaires where every individual answer directly as well as the questions that the participants will write down the answers on a shit of paper. To be able to determine the external relationship I may use the hidden cameras to be able to determine how they relate to other people around them. The cameras will assist my research because I will be able to determine what they do in order to belong to the different groups around them as well as to be able to know how their different cultures contribute to the way they thinking and act towards different situations.

Procedure

1. The participants will be recruited

2. The participants will be asked questions where they are going to answer directly to the interviewer.

3. They are going to be assigned with different tasks and with the use of the hidden cameras the participants will be monitored to how they react to the different tasks.

4. Participants will be provided with a piece of paper as well as a pen where they will write down the answer for a quiz that will be provided for them.

5. Participants will be rated according to the answers they provided the question they are asked as well as to how they handled different tasks which were assigned to them.

Design

The design technique that I am planning to use on my attitude, as well as social cognition research, would be the correlation research design. The design is essential for this research because it focuses on two or more quantitative variables which are from the same participant groups when a researcher if often trying to determine the relationship between the participants, that is similar thinking patterns, behavior patterns among other aspects that the research may focus upon (Myers, 2013).

Results

The outcome of the research is aimed at providing the proof that the social cognition contributes to individual behavior as well as decision making. The statistics that will be used to determining the outcome of the research would be the Anova model because it focuses on providing an explanation on how people create impressions of others based on the several behaviors that the other person displays. This model argues that individuals utilize consensus, consistency as well as distinctiveness information to be able to determine the cause of the particular behavior. The table below represents the Anova model

situation

Consensus

Distinctiveness

Consistency

Attribution

Scenario A: Actions towards a particular target by a participant

Focusing on the participant. Does all the other participants act this way towards the target.

Focusing on the target do the participants act this way towards other targets

Do the participant at the way towards the target on other occasions

non

Scenario A

Low Consensus other participants do not act the same way

Low distinctiveness: the participant act the same way on different targets

High consistency: it is Participant’s usual behavior

Personal attribution

Scenario B: He eats bread

Scenario B

High Consensus:

Everyone eats bread

High distinctiveness: only bread is being eaten

High consistency:

He is always eating bread

External attribution: bread is sweet

Discussion

If I would obtain significance result in my research it would mean that the outcome may not be attributed to a chance which means that if the null hypothesis was true, there would be a low probability of obtaining larger results on the other hand if the result obtained from the research were non-significant it would mean that the results obtained demonstrate no evidence of the null hypothesis being false due to the high probability value.

For a study to have followed the APA guidelines it is required that the psychologist who is conducting the research informs the participants involved in the research (Barcharts, 2015). The participants should be informed the aim of the research the duration that the research would take among other important information that the participants may need to know. A participant has the right to decline to participate in the research as well as withdraw from the ongoing research after it has started and anticipated the consequences of doing so. The research will adhere to the APA guidelines because the participants will be informed of any information that they would need concerning the research.

The limitation that I would experience when conducting this research is lacking people who are willing to take part in the research process. Also due to the cultural diversity, there might be some of the issues which might lead to disagreement between the interviewer and the subject which might lead to misunderstanding as well as the provision of negative feedback.

Conclusion

Based on the current study regarding how social cognition contributes to human judgment as well as behavior. The study may also be used its future to be able to determine how an individual social surrounding may influence them to commit criminal and other related behaviors and the criminal behaviors may be avoided.
