Domestic workers in the United States of America continue to face many challenges within their line of duty. This aspect is even though they play a crucial role in the economic establishment of the nation through their role in taking care of American homes when the owners are out there building the economy. For many years, it has been claimed that the plight of domestic workers has been on a negative note because of the lack of many interventions that could have otherwise helped them. Many still believe that, unlike other professions whereby the rule of law is followed by the latter, most of these domestic workers normally work under the mercies of their employers and recruitment agencies. According to a Center for American Progress survey, around 2.5 million domestic workers in the United States are still subjected to discrimination, sexual harassment, and economic exploitation. I think these problems are exacerbated in the absence of legislation to protect people from their situation under federal and state protection laws. Workers frequently lack access to the avenues for airing their concerns and criticisms. Many are forced to suffer in silence, with no one caring about their well-being but their employers. Another source by Claudia Yaw of The Seattle Times claims that unfortunately, domestic workers’ rights have been ignored in the United States for a long time. Labor regulations that prohibit some domestic employees from receiving a minimum hourly wage, for example, have brought this to light.
Is this a social issue that has continued to plague domestic workers? From my previous interaction with some domestic workers, it is evident that there is a need to have them protected from many forms of exploitation at the hands of their employers. Most of these domestic workers normally know little about their rights. This aspect is mainly because many of them come from underprivileged backgrounds that do not give them much choice. Second, through watching many documentaries about the same issue, I have also come to realize that most of these domestic workers are usually immigrants from less developed countries such as those in the lain America, such as Honduras and Colombia. Others have come from the Philippines, and representation with favorable legislation will remain a mirage because they know little about American laws. I believe is that proper regulation safeguarding domestic workers is becoming increasingly important in this country. Domestic workers in the country still suffer several difficulties in the course of their employment, including sexual harassment, being overworked and underpaid, and being forced to perform excessively long hours of overtime. This is an important consideration. With a plethora of legislation at the federal and state levels, the rights of domestic employees are better safeguarded, putting them on a par with other American workers.
