The Concept of Social Media
In the 21st century, media has begun to have rapid and great presence in our lives. Our computerized existence has taken part of our identity and impacts our mental health both positively and negatively. However, its is important that we embrace the positivity associated with social media and protect ourselves from its negativities. Faults have been found on the adverse effects of social media on communities’ cultures, individuals and even other groups. While social media positively impacts the world by putting everything in a small gadget, the world should ultimately look at social media not positively or negatively but in a neutral way because it is not always intellectually stimulating.
In support of Kara Woodridge’s blog article, social media impacts individual’s life according to their choice of use. Social media has changed lives to the better only if the tools are used well. For example, social media has increased interaction of people using social networks like Instagram. This makes communities more powerful as they grow. It’s a thank you to social networks as every person with negligible views does not feel alone. Enable for debate organizing to share opinions and ideas thus educative.
Notably, social media is now a necessity when it comes to business; its now more optional as there is a wide range of reaching customers and growing brands. According to statistics, most people on Instagram follow brands more than they follow celebrities (Mackson et al 2019). Therefore, if you are missing out on social media then you missing out on the fastest and most effective way of reaching out to almost half of the world’s population. This platform has increased brand awareness.
Alternatively, social media can be associated with safety risks. In this case we say social media is a foe. Social media dives away the attention of the user as it is addictive. When this individual uses social media while driving then there is greater risk of accidents occurrence. Watching pornographic videos is another risk associated with social media especially in the young generation. This has great effects on the mental growth of a child therefore eroding the cultures we’ve respected all this while. This can be reduced by limiting the amount of freedom given to children on technology
Furthermore, social media leads to saving our happiness in likes from followers which changes self-perception. Often, we get too much into media to a point where we put our lives in the hands of media followers and online friends and forget about the real people surrounding us (Mackson et al 2019). We tend to be defined by the number of likes we have. however, we should remember that we cannot be defined by social media’s comments but our own perception. The stigma faced by young people today is as a result of social media and still be tackled by social media. Therefore, as long as we manage how to use social media tool, we will be able to curb the negative effects.
Conclusively, the power social media has on people is treacherous and is often unnoticed. This should be taken with serious effect because if not so, social media could result to international and national problems. Regulations and limitations should be put in place to avoid accumulation of repercussions. The fast access to information on social media platforms that is required to be of benefit to the community or society actually is the one that is harmful to the society.
