Social Institutions

The educational institutions are directly involved with the issue of unemployment. It is often believed that children go to school to gain skills and the knowledge needed to gain useful employment. It has been observed that high school dropouts are twice likely to be unemployed compared to those who are unemployed. One way of addressing the issue of unemployment is to educate as many children as possible. However, sometimes being educated does not guarantee that someone will get employment in the desired field. It still depends on the availability of jobs and governance. Getting an education also is not easy it needs money to do so.

Educational institutions have the power to mold the minds of the students entrusted to them. Institutions of learning can help the students gain relevant skills that they need to be employed. ("Power – a health and social justice issue (NHS Health Scotland and GCPH)", 2017)The tutors, teachers, instructors, and professors should also avail the career advice and support to all the students under them. So it does not only stop at teaching them but it goes further than that.

Institutions of learning can also partner with other organizations and companies that can offer internships and work for students that leave a particular institution. Learning institutions can also offer scholarships to needy students.

The functionalist approach fits with the unemployment issue. The high rates of unemployment destabilize the society's equilibrium and so the society through its institutions should find a solution to this social problem. In this case, the educational institutions as a proper part of society should fulfill their mandate of equipping people with skills and knowledge that they need to earn an income. This is done not by overhauling the entire educational system that is not doing its role but by gradual steps towards the goal.
