Social media has gained a lot of popularity with many college students reportedly spending a lot of their time on social media. In this survey, questionnaire were administered to different students to give information on the different ways they use social media, number of hours and since when they began using social media. From the survey of 19 respondents, 15 indicated that they began using social media at the age of 12 years (8th grade), while only 4 reported to have started using social media at age 15 years and above. 10 respondents reported to be single and all of them spent between 3 hours and 10 hours on social media. The rest who were either in relationships, dating or engaged spent less than 3 hours on social media. All 19 respondents reported to be active social media users with at least one account, with 8 respondents having 2 or more social media sites. 12 respondent were Snap chat users, 10 Facebook users, 7 twitter users, 1 user tumbrel user but none reported to have used Myspace. All the participants indicated that they use social media for communication, networking or for entertainment.

It is possible to deduce from the survey that most of the people spending more time in social media each day are those that are not in relationships. Social media has taken the place community socialization since here 10 participants reported to be single and had more than 3 hours of active social media with some reporting about 10 hours a day in social media. People can socialize online and ignore one on one interactions. Those in relationships and engaged had less time in social media meaning they spent their time with their partners. In addition, social media has enhanced communication as people can communicate without incurring any cost to friends and family in far distances. Social media has negatively affected face to face communication with people choosing to stay at the comfort of their house and communicate with friends rather than physically visiting them. Face to face communication builds trust, friendship and end up to relationship, but social media deny people the capacity to interact hence most of the people are single with many hours of social media communication.
