Take Home Exam (open book)

The exam is worth 30% of the final grade

Students to choose 2 of the 5 questions to answer in essay format.

Students can make use of course materials —activities, assigned readings

and learning modules—in answering the question they choose. Outside

sources are prohibited. These questions were sent in advance with the

understanding that the electronic copies of the 2 essays are submitted in the

Dropbox starting on August 11t h and ending on August 22nd.

Refer to the Short Essay Rubric on how the paper will be graded.

Essay Questions

1. Canadian culture treats men and women differently. Discuss dominant culture and subordinate culture to explain why these differences exist in Canada?

2. Which of the following theories of deviance: differential association, labeling

theory, social control, social disorganization and control theory described in

Chapter 6 - best explain the increase in cheating among college students? Why?

3. Gender inequality exists between men and women in paid labour and household labour. Compare and contrast why power gender inequalities exist between men and women and how a conflict theorist or feminist theorist would address the reinforcement of these gender inequalities.

4. If you were going to start an organization to decrease racial or ethnic prejudice,

would you focus on the micro or macro level? Why? Explain what your

organization would do.

5. Have you ever experienced being stereotyped because of your race or ethnicity?

Why, or why not? How can racial stereotypes harm societies, as well as groups

and individuals?

Rubric for Short Essay

Each short essay is worth 15 marks. The word count is 500 words; please stay within

10% of the word count. There are 2 papers required for the take-home exam – which

constitutes 30 of final mark. Below is an outline on how you will be marked.

Short essay is poorly organized and difficult to read – does flow logically from one paragraph to the other. Multiple spelling and/or grammatical errors. Writing lacks clarity and conciseness.

Short essay lacks focus and attempts to complete the assignment but demonstrates weakness in organization. Spelling and grammar is weak.
