Essay Question and Content:
Throughout the course we have encountered how race and ethnicity are socially constructed categories. We have also covered the question of “colorblindness”(especially after the election of President Obama) in the United States.
• For the first part of your paper, I want you to address whether you believe the United States is currently a truly “colorblind society” and if it is not, can it ever become one.
o To support your position, you are need to apply at least three sociological concepts, ideas, and/or theories discussed in class, for example prejudice, discrimination, institutional or structural racism etc.
o As further evidence, you should analyze one aspect of the contemporary social institutions (e.g., work, education, health care, criminal justice system, etc.). You need to use examples from the readings, as well as your own experiences.
• For the second part, I would like you to suggest what actions you think would help move US society forward towards reconciliation and the creation of a more racially and ethnically equitable society.
As you are writing your essay, please make sure to pay attention to the following:
• Within your discussion you should define these concepts in your own words (please do not just quote the readings).
• Use examples from the readings and your personal experiences. • Besides the readings, you should use a minimum of two scholarly articles. • Your observations should use sociological concepts and evidence rather than
simply being your opinions.
• Please do not use Wikipedia. Try not to use direct quotes. Please provide proper citations (use your discipline’s style; APA, MLA, Chicago, etc. Please provide a bibliography at the end (this does not count towards the total number of pages.)
