Homework 2 - Literature Review

Due: Wednesday, 8/15/18, 10a

Submit to EEE dropbox.

Page constraints: 2-3 pages (not including a works cited); double-spaced; 12pt. font

Consider the following research question:

Are first generation students more greatly impacted by macro-level factors (like educational opportunities available, financial circumstances, prior education experience), or by micro-level factors (like ambition and family support)?

Draft a literature review using the following articles (and others should you chose): Roderick et. al (2011); Owens and Lynch (2013); Collier and Morgan (2008); Dennis et. al. (2005); Sy and Brittain (2008), and Spiegler and Bednarek (2013). You can find these articles on the course website.

Your literature review should not answer the research question. Rather, it should organize existing research to set the stage for the rest of your article. Also, be sure to use ASA format, and to cite properly. Include a works cited page, using ASA format.

Follow the following template to draft a complete literature review with headings, subheadings, and paragraphs:

1. Put a header on your literature review

2. Introduce the topic

a. Give some background info about first generation students and how they have different experiences and outcome than non-first-gen students.

b. What are different ways this topic is approached (see Spiegler and Bednarek (2013, p. 321-328)?

c. What are some research methods that are used to approach this topic? (simply look the methods from the articles assigned)

(Continue to next page)

3. Summarize competing perspectives on factors that impact first generation students

a. Put a header here: “Micro-Level Factors Impacting First Generation Students”

i. In 1-2 paragraphs summarize research findings about micro-level factors that impact first generation students

b. Put a header here: “Macro-level Factors Impacting First Generation Students”

i. In 1-2 paragraphs summarize research findings about macro-level factors that impact first generation students

4. Put a new header here saying “Theoretical Tensions and Research Question”

a. Write a paragraph that addresses:

i. Is there conflict in the literature? Is it clear that either micro or macro level factors solely have an impact?

ii. How does this theoretical tension lead to your research question? And, what is your research question? How will your research question address that conflict?

iii. What methods will you use to do so? (both qualitative and quantitative methods)

5. Place a new header “Works Cited”

a. List the citations for the authors you used.

b. You can use google scholar to get citations and adapt them to ASA format.
