DR. RESEARCH: What is a S.M.A.R.T. goal? A S.M.A.R.T. goal has five critical components, and each component must be included in order for the goal to be considered a S.M.A.R.T. goal. First, a S.M.A.R.T. goal must be specific. The goal must state what is going to be accomplished, why the goal needs to be accomplished or is beneficial, and how the goal is going to be accomplished.
Second, a S.M.A.R.T. goal must be measurable. When a goal is measurable, we will know what evidence is needed to show that the goal has been accomplished. Third, a S.M.A.R.T. goal must be attainable. A S.M.A.R.T. goal should be challenging but should not be impossible.
Fourth, a S.M.A.R.T. goal must be realistic and relevant. You may need to obtain knowledge or skills in order to achieve the goal, but the acquisition of this knowledge or skill should not be unattainable. In addition, the goal should be related to its purpose. For example, a goal related to how you will meet the needs of your learners might incorporate the needs of your specific student population.
Finally, a S.M.A.R.T. goal must be timely. The timeframe should be feasible but also specific. Ideally, the date the goal will be accomplished by should be clearly stated. When all of these components have been included, a S.M.A.R.T. goal has been created.
