Part 1: As a Group, do the following for your Walking Survey Presentation :

A. Walking Survey: Visit (in groups of 2 or more)* any single 4-block stretch of Lexington Avenue between 70th Street and 86th Street. Visit another 4-block stretch of Lexington Avenue between 118th and 134th Streets.

OR : Visit a neighborhood in NYC area that you are familiar enough with that

you can select two 4-block stretches in contrasting areas of town, i.e., higher

and lower SES areas that you can compare for this assignment.

B. Gather your data by documenting—via photographs, notetaking, conversations, video etc.—the categories listed in “ What to examine in a general community assessment survey” in http://ctb.ku.edu/en/table-of-contents/assessment/assessing-community-needs-and-resources/windshield-walking-surveys/main (use these categories as sub-headings when you list and report your findings.

C. Present your Findings to the Class via VoiceThread on Bb : Describe your findings and contrast the two neighborhoods. Based on your neighborhood’s findings, select and describe a public health/ social determinant of health issue on which to focus your Small Area Analysis in your Final Paper—use this to guide you: (http://ctb.ku.edu/en/table-of-contents/assessment/assessing-community-needs-and-resources/small-area-analysis/main ).

(Each group member can describe their individual issue selection in the presentation, and then write about that issue in their individual research paper.)

Part II: Individually do the following for your Small Area Analysis Project Paper :

1. Write a 10-12 pg report on your Walking Survey findings and selected health issue. Follow the Small Area Analysis Final Paper instructions and outline on the following page. Be sure to include all components and respond to all questions, as outlined. Don’t forget to use headings and sub-headings.

1. Submit final report by due date . Your Final Paper is an individual project. If it becomes evident that your Final Paper was written as a group, you may receive a zero for the assignment.

Small Area Analysis Project – Final Paper Structure

Section

What this section must include:

Introduction

1. Provide an overview (short summary) of your findings based on the assessment questions from the Community Toolbox (CTB) that you used for your Walking Survey.

2. State and discuss a health issue/social determinant issue

(Compare the two community areas first, and then present one public health outcome that you will link to these structural differences—i.e., obesity, asthma, violence, malnutrition, substance addiction, hypertension, diabetes, etc.)

Literature Review

1. Discuss previous studies on your topic, including relevant assigned articles and other literature that you found when researching your selected topic (articles; studies; databases, etc.).

2. Clearly define your research question—>What is your selected health outcome, and what is the focus of your report?

3. Discuss what your study will contribute to the public health literature (Why it’s important).

Methods

1. Discuss your two sites and populations therein (you will need to look at census data for zip codes 10035 and 10028 for the East Harlem areas; or find the zip code for the different area you surveyed: http://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/index.xhtml).

2. Describe your research methods and why they are appropriate to addressing your research question.

3. Discuss how you collected and analyzed your data.

Findings

Small Area Analysis

1. Give a basic quantitative analysis of your findings.

How did the numbers compare from one neighborhood to the other? (e.g. # of stores with fresh foods, # of fast food restaurants and alcohol outlets, pawn shops, tattoo parlors, hookah/vapor lounges, health services, religious center, etc.).

2. Give a basic qualitative analysis of your findings – give a detailed description of the similarities and differences you saw in the items you assessed, and the overall characteristics of the two neighborhoods (condition, walkability, facilities, etc.).

Discussion &

Conclusion

What are your basic conclusions ? Do you think you did a fair job of assembling information and comparing the neighborhoods?

From the CTB Small Area Analysis page (http://ctb.ku.edu/en/table-of-contents/assessment/assessing-community-needs-and-resources/small-area-analysis/main )

Discuss : what worked well, what kind of information was most valuable, whether your understanding of causes and identification of trends were accurate, and whether the information you gathered was in fact instrumental in your being able to address the issues and disparities you were concerned with.
