Skin Movie Review

Introduction

The “Skin” is a biographical American drama film that has been written and directed by Guy Nattiv. The film premiered on September 8th, 2018 at the Toronto 2018 International Film Festival. The film uses the drama genre where the author tries to communicate about racial discrimination and consequences of crime. The author features the story of Jeffrey who is the main character and acts as the white supremacist. Jeffrey has his gang, and they together molest other people so that they can remain in full control of the region. However, their actions end up causing them more harm and life events and situations forces Jeffrey who is the leader of the gang to change for the better and even volunteer to work with FBI to be utterly free from the band.

The film is one of the best latest movies that can be classified as being both educative and entertaining at the same time. It is a film that addresses issues that are barely talked about. Looking at the film keenly, there are a series of film elements that the producer has perfectly and professionally applied hence making it a high-quality production. These elements are; social significance/meaning, plot, and sound effects. The listed film elements make the film stand out from many in the film industry as the film does not only entertain but also educate. This review shall hence focus on reviewing the three main elements (plot, social significance, sound effects) and as applied in the film and how they contribute to making the film interesting and educative.

Plot

The plot is one of the major movie strength as it has been structured in a manner that makes the film and all actions in it to follow a perfect sequence hence making it logical. By the way, scenes follow each other and specific actions captured in every stage; it is possible for one to understand the overall meaning of the film. Moreover, through the plot, the author has made the film to appear organized because the plot clearly explains why the specific actions that the selected actors and actresses are taking part in. Moreover, because of a high-quality plot, all other elements have been embraced for instance themes, different settings, where every character will come in and exit, when dialogue or monologue will take place, the visuals, sounds, and conflicts.

In the film, the author has set a plot uniquely and professionally where it is almost hard for the audience to predict how events will turn out in every scene. The more reason is that the plot does not have a specific way that events are likely to take place. Surprisingly, the plot perfectly conveys the intended message. For instance, the writer introduces the audience to a father (Jeffrey) and his son (Troy) where Jeffrey cuts his son’s hair. As a family, they go to the lakeside together with his friends (Charles, 2018). Jeffrey and his friends are full of tattoos indication that they are members of Neo-Nazis. Upon getting to the lake, Jeffrey brags that his son can shoot perfectly well with a rifle as he calls him a pro and he even bets a challenge, and surprisingly, Troy shoots the target. From the introduction, it is evident that the author has used the plot to create a clear picture of the direction that the film is talking.

After having a good time at the lake, the gang proceeds to the grocery store where -Jeffrey's wife Christa shops for food. However, Troy spots and African- American man by the name of Jaydee holding a toy and the two smile at each other. However, due to the supremacist nature of Jeffrey, he misinterprets the gesture and accuses the African-American of messing with his son, and he even insults the Jaydee for no apparent reason, but surprisingly, Jaydee does not respond but leave telling Jeffrey that he is the problem.

Jeffrey being the leader of the gang tells his friends about the dispute, and they follow Jaydee to the parking lot where they beat Jaydee but Jaydee's wife calls the police, and all this time Troy watches the incident (Charles, 2018). In the next scene, the writer features Jeffrey together with his son as they are driving home only to find a van blocking the way. As usual, Jeffrey walks towards the van to find out why and even apply his white supremacist nature. To his surprise, a group of African-American men abducts him, and he is taken to a home garage where he is drugged and tattooed for several days, and Jaydee is also there in the scene recovering from the beatings.

Days later, Jeffrey is abandoned naked at the same point he was abducted. His entire body is tattooed entirely black. This is to the point that when Jeffrey gets home, Christa does not recognize him but he uses tactics to communicate with her as Christa is holding a gun thinking that it is the African-American men who want to attack her. From this incident and also the love that Jeffrey has developed for his wife; Jeffrey decides to abandon his skinhead life by betraying his other gang members to the FBI. His overall intention is to remove the black ink all overall his white skin.

Social significance

The film has one of the best social meanings that can help society and people on individual capacities. This is a major strength of the film that is likely to make the film to become an award-winning film. Starting with the main message which is racial discrimination where the writer is conveying a message that does not pay but rather causes harm and pain to the perpetrators. The more reason they bear the pain and burden of feeling superior but they eventually come to realize that every member of society is equally important.

Another social significance of the film is that it teaches the importance of values which determines the personality of a person. For instance in this case; Jaydee is all humble and even after being abused; he did not respond negatively but rather informed Jeffrey that he is the problem. Due to pride and feeling superior, Jeffrey did not get the message but instead called the gang to beat up Jaydee an action that attracted retaliation from members of the African-American race. The retaliation leaves Jeffrey helpless and desperate to the point of being pushed to change for the better.

Sound effects

The film producer has entirely made use of sound to keep the audience interested. The sound has also been used to alert the audience about an expected change of scenes by use of fast to slow sounds and events, for instance, a high sound where an event that needs attention is about to take place. Silence has also been used as part of a sound effect to make the audience pay attention, and the application of all these different sound effects is remarkable. For instance, in the film, there are various scenes, and different sounds in terms of intensity and pace have been used depending on the speed of the actors and action taking place. For instance, when significant actions are taking place like Troy shooting the target, beating up Jaydee, when Jeffrey sees his naked body after being abandoned on the road through a window reflection, and when his wife Christa attempt to shoot him thinking that he is an African- American.

Conclusion

The film “Skin” is written and authored by Guy Nattiv, and it falls under the biographic drama genre. The film was released for public viewing in 2018 where the overall message being conveyed is about racial discrimination and how best to address the vice. The film writer has made use of different film elements to come up with high-quality film production that is both intriguing and educating. This is an excellent combination because by watching the film, one can learn several lessons. The plot is one of the elements that the author has applied correctly and makes the film highly coordinated and meaningful. The quality plot provides a clear sequence of events.

Social significance is another element that makes the film standout and retains relevance to society for the longest time. Moreover, the issue being addressed is sensitive and the message professionally delivered. Lastly, the sound effect is professionally applied in the film. The film is highly recommendable for viewers from teenage as there are several lessons they can learn and keep away from racial discrimination and acts of retaliation. The more reason is that the film provides consequences of such engagements and also provides how the as individuals and society at large can address the problem to address the issue permanently.
