Air pollution

Air pollution refers to the presence or the introduction of elements that have a poisonous of a harmful effect into the atmosphere. Air pollution has been the main cause of health problems in the world today especially heart and lungs related problems. However, it is the role of every person to reduce air pollution through a change of behavior and holding campaigns which seek to address this problem.

For a long time, people have been ignorant about the issue of air pollution but it is high time to take action and ensure that the world is a safe place to live in and for the sake of our future generation. Therefore, it is time to evaluate the causes of air pollution, the health problems it brings and provide a solution. It is the role of the government, the big business owner as well as each individual to take action children (West, et al. 2013). After all, every individual pollutes the air in one way or the other and working together is the only way of solving this mutual problem.

Causes of air pollution

Air pollution is caused by several issues which range from inappropriate government policies, industrial emissions, and household activities.

They include:

· The burning of fossil fuels which produce gases such as sulfur dioxide is one of the major industrial pollutants. The gases come from burning petroleum and coals to source energy and are a major air pollutant that causes a greenhouse effect on the environment. Such gases cause health problems to human being especially pregnant women and children (West, et al. 2013).

· Individuals such as farmers also contribute to air pollution through the use of products such as ammonia. Ammonia produces dangerous gases in the atmosphere. Using the pesticides, fertilizers and insecticides produce harmful gases which cause diseases.

· Household’s activities also cause indoor air pollution. The cleaning products that are used, the sources of energy or heat and the painting supplies cases air pollution which is harmful to the health of the people living in that environment children (West, et al. 2013).

Effects of air pollution on health

Air pollution has both short term and long term effects on the health of a human being. They included:

Short-term effects

· Respiratory and aggravated cardiovascular diseases

· Additional stress to the lungs and the heart, and they are forced to work extra hard to supply oxygen to the whole body (Héroux, et al. 2015).

· The cells that make up the respiratory systems are damaged which could call for medical attention.

Long-term effect

· The lungs that experience air pollution for a long time have an accelerated aging.

· The lungs have a decreased function as well as capacity (Héroux, et al. 2015).

· Development of diseases such as asthma, emphysema, bronchitis and other forms of cancer.

Solutions

The only way that the government, industries, and households can prevent the health issues is to reduce air pollution. The measures to reduce air pollution include:

· Using the public means of transport. People are encouraged to use public mode of transport to reduce the number of cars on the roads and reduces air pollution (Gordon, et al. 2014).

· Conserve energy. Switching the lights off and other equipments that use electricity reduces fossils burned to generate electricity.

· The government should emphasize on the use of clean energy resources such as the solar panels, wind and geothermal to curb air pollution.

How the agency addresses the concern

The agency seeks to inform people of the problems associated with air pollution and how each and every person has a role to play to reduce the effect. The government should also play a role in implementing policies that will reduce the use of fossil fuels, especially by the manufacturing industries. Therefore, it is time to take action and stop pointing figure because a change begins with each and every one of us.
