Farquaad selects Shrek as the one to go rescue the princess after he wins the fight. Farquaad tells the donkey that he will accompany him to the tower where Fiona has been captured by the dragon. When they enter the castle, Shrek is attacked by the dragon and falls. The dragon then falls in love with the donkey, giving Shrek time to see Fiona. They pick her up and escape while the dragon chases them. On the way, Fiona discovers that Shrek is an ogre and gets disappointed. Fiona and Shrek, however, fall in love with each other later. They finally deliver Fiona and Shrek gets back his swamp but does not like the fact that Fiona is marrying Farquaad. Farquaad is swallowed by the dragon when it comes back and Fiona and Shrek marry after she transforms into an ogre.
Concept 1
The development of the relationship between the ogre and the monkey is impacted by the interactive communication model (McCornack, 2015, p.38). In the interactive communication model, communication is impacted by the feedback and experience. Feedback is comprised of verbal and nonverbal messages. They engage in conversations whereby each sends and listens to a message from the other. When donkey tells Shrek to inform him why he is ready to face a dragon to rescue the princess, Shrek responds by telling him that people do not understand a lot of things about ogres. When Shrek picks Princess Fiona, he gestures at the donkey indicating that they should leave. The short distance that the donkey maintains with the ogre shows their high level of intimacy. The posture maintained by the donkey shows that he is relaxed and comfortable when talking to Shrek.
Concept 2
The monkey displays attachment avoidance since he desperately wants to be the ogre’s friend (McCornack, 2015, p.44). Attachment avoidance has been defined as the degree to which someone wants to have interpersonal ties with another person. In the film, the donkey wants interpersonal ties with Shrek. Even when Shrek scares the donkey, he does not run away. This is because he is so determined to have a close relationship with the ogre. He even accepts to live with him at the swamp. When Shrek goes to rescue Fiona the princess, donkey goes along with him. He also forgives him multiple times after Shrek wrongs him so that they can continue being good friends. Shrek also displays attachment avoidance since he wants to have close ties with the princess.
Concept 3
Princess Fiona displays a high level of self-esteem by initially refusing to date Shrek because he was an ogre. (McCornack, 2015, p.56). Self-esteem is the value one assigns to himself/herself. The donkey does not mind having an ogre as a colleague. Shrek also demonstrates high self-esteem because he does not fear to fight the dragon. Although Shrek is an ogre, he goes ahead and declares his love for Fiona the princess. He does not fear rejection even though Fiona stated that she wouldn't be interested in dating an ogre. Shrek chases away the representatives sent by Farquaad to inform him of the reward of removing the fairytale creatures from the swamp if he saves Fiona. Farquaad demonstrated a high level of self-esteem by inviting the ogre and telling him that he would remove the fairytale creatures from the swamp only if Shrek would accept to rescue the princess from the dragon.
