Final Portfolio
Why do you think it is that Dixon uniquely structures his story?
By structuring the story in reverse, Dixon aims to engage the reader to think critically about the events. For the reader to understand the plot, they have to piece together clues as the events unfold. The structure also provides an unexpected twist that makes the story more interesting. If Dixon structured the story chronologically, it would not be as engaging. Another function of the structure is to enable the reader to be sympathetic with the primary protagonist. The story is told from the protagonist’s view and the reader gets to empathize with his experiences.
What do you think the meaning of the title is?
The meaning of the title “Wife in Reverse” is meant to illustrate the chronology which the protagonist uses to remember his wife. The main character remembers the recent events with his wife and works his way backward. The title is reflective of how people remember their loved ones.
What do you feel the overall meaning of the story is?
The meaning of the story is that life experiences pass by very fast. Dixon conveys the message that people experience the fleeting nature of life when they look back. The protagonist in the story illustrates that memories only cover specific highlights. Also, the protagonist only reflects on the most significant experiences he had with his wife. Moreover, now that his wife is gone, it means he will not be able to create new experiences with her. Dixon illustrates the importance of treasuring the moments we share with loved ones.
Do you feel the story was moving or powerful in any way?
