SUBJECT: Work Discrimination

Introduction

Diversity is a severe problem in our society as it is everywhere and is always on the rise. As pointed out in a previous study, the difference can be found in gender, religion, sexual orientation, social class, age, race, ethnicity, nationality and physical abilities. These many diversities occurring in one place, especially a workplace can be hectic and lead to a lot of misunderstandings.

It is very common to see people supporting their way of thinking and beliefs to an extent they end up feeling as if they are being attacked when told otherwise. In a working environ, unity must be upheld at the highest level at all times as this ensures competence and efficiency. On the other hand, high regard for diversity can easily cause employees to jeopardise an enterprise, physical abuse, ill mouthing others or even poor allocation of work and salaries/raise.

Problem

According to the book The Diversity Machine by Lynch, we are dawning back to the old ways of taking matters into our own hands and standing to benefit ourselves and those of our likeness. Lynch's main focus was on the racial diversity that has been in existence since the beginning of time but was created by man. In the book, white persons, or rather, the white race felt as if they could not be supervised or be under any one of a different color thus, causing incompetence to tarnish the image of the one above them. Considering this is but one side of the diversity levels, it is very difficult thinking of the various calamities that can arise if people oblige to their superego and deem themselves ‘gods' of some sort. This problem can easily bring economies down, lead to wars across the globe, dear I call it World War Three (Lynch)

According to the federal Age, Discrimination on Employment Act people of all ages requires equal treatment when it comes to accessing job opportunities. However, this is not the case, according to a blog post by Kenneth Terrell, over 20, 857 complaints have been raised where many victims have been wrongly dismissed from their jobs in place of a younger person or reported unqualified despite being more qualified than the counter arts. Thus, diversity is a clear menace in society no matter what form of difference it is, some even worse than others, yet all remain to be a problem.

Solution

As a means of reducing levels of discrimination at workplaces, companies and businesses need to develop strict policies that will apply to all employees including stakeholders. These policies need to eradicate any unlawful acts committed by the company such as uncalled for job termination or gross misconduct being allowed to walk free. Workplaces also need to develop programs where employees can interact in a non-workplace environ to determine which employee is most likely to violate the company policy. Counselling sessions and one on one incident sharing moment should also be introduced in a company as a means to allow other employees to walk in shoes they might deem to be beneath them (Brandon)

Conclusion

In conclusion, quality and efficiency do not rely on ones, background, appearance etc., it all relies on how they perform in a working space. Therefore, an implementation of these new set of guidelines will make it possible for employees to understand there is no ‘I' in a team. The policies will also establish a neutral ground and a learning space for many people which can lead them to change their negative way of thinking (Brandon).
