HIST 205.101

Surviving and Thriving in the Jim Crow Era

Please write a short response paper to the following question.

What were the two most effective strategies African Americans could use to survive and thrive in the early Jim Crow era, a period running from roughly 1890 to 1920 that historian Rayford Logan referred to as the nadir of African American life.

Your paper should have the following:

--400-to 500 words double-spaced

--A clear argument that you summarize in a 1-2 sentence thesis statement that appears underlined and at the end of your first paragraph. An argument, by definition, must be an evidence-based interpretation that allows for a counter-argument.

Please read this explanation of academic arguments: http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/argument/

--A topic sentence at the first sentence of each paragraph that summarizes the overall argument of that paragraph.

--Evidence and citations from at least two readings or viewings from our course.

-- Footnotes for each reading or viewing you draw from. Here’s how to add footnotes in Word: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/insert-footnotes-and-endnotes-61f3fb1a-4717-414c-9a8f-015a5f3ff4cb

The footnote format you should use is:

Author(s), Title (Place of publication: publisher, year), page numbers. For example: Jane Doe, History of Baltimore (New York: Penguin Press, 2018), 24-25.

--Be sure to proof-read and edit your paper, for style, grammar and clarity of argument. Be sure to run spell- and grammar-check manually in Word: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/check-spelling-and-grammar-in-office-5cdeced7-d81d-47de-9096-efd0ee909227
