This case is not about a problem or a situation that I am facing, but about a problem that my store manager has faced within the past week or so. I work for a company whose mission is to sell quality goods and services at a low cost. We have many departments and many managers that manage those departments. And like any store there are employees who purchase items at a marked down price or buy the item at the original price and later on get an adjustment. A problem occurred when a Merchandising manager came in to return a couch that he had purchased a couple years ago. He came in with the original receipt, which stated that he purchased the couch for the original price. The problem was that he had failed to mention that he had gotten a price adjustment for the couch, which the receipt didn’t show and was refunded for the original amount.
He told the refund clerk that he had purchased the couch at the original price and to continue to process the return. Because the system showed the couch was at a marked down price, the refund clerk had to ask for a key from a supervisor or a manager. A key is given as an approval of the price when the price of an item has changed. A supervisor came and asked what the key was for, she asked the Merchandising Manager if the price was the actual price that he had paid for. He said yes, but she was hesitant to give him the key. She asked a second time and he showed her the receipt and told her to approve the amount. A few weeks go by and the Merchandising Manager is called in to the office. When he was told that he was going to be fired, he hired a lawyer and threatened to expose managers, supervisors, and employees who have committed the same crime.
Anytime an employee is on the verge of being fired, a file containing details of the incident has to be sent to corporate. There the legal team along with other authorities review the case and decide on whether or not to fire the employee. For this case they decided to demote the manager and give him the option of staying at the current location as a cashier, or transfer to another location as a stocker.

Short Case
During this semester, I am working at Mr. Pike International Education Center
during this semester. I have been working with the company for almost two months.
The company is an international agency that helps Chinese students find a school in
America. This is my first job in the United States. I choose this job because my
supervisor is Taiwanese, I can talk with him use my native language. I have two more
workmates work with me during my internship. They are International students too at
CSUN.
My supervisor wants to open a new business area that is let Chinese high school
students take American’s AP online classes. Nowadays, more and more Chinese
students want to study in America to get an undergraduate degree. If they can take AP
in Chinese, it will help them save more time spent in the American’s university.
Furthermore, this strategy will make more money because online class allows more
students to take at the same time, but we are in trouble because we have no experience
with the AP class. I and my workmates come to America after we graduated from
high school. We need to research which high school has an international office that
accepts Chinese student and ask do they provide AP class. Furthermore, we need to
take a lot of phone call to know more detail such as how much for each class, how
long for each class, does the school provides about the classes video and so on. We
are international students, our language does not vary enough to answer so many
phone calls, and we also need to talk notes about what we get. This is a tough job.
When we are working on this job, my supervisor will give us a new job to interrupt us
to help other customers. My supervisor does not come to the office very often because
he has other company at the riverside, we need to talk to him through a cell phone. It
will give us more tasks.
I have a lot of pressure during this semester because this is my first job in
America, this is a good opportunity to practice, but I hope my supervisor can hire a
native American to help us.

I am currently interning at FedEx Services, the group that I’m part of deals with domestic
clients that ship or spent over $100,000 worth of shipping services. They call these high priority
clients; specialized sales executives try their best to attract their business over to FedEx. Most of
these executives have worked for longer than 8 years in their current positions.
In the short time that I have been there, I came to find out that they have recently hired a
new pricing specialist. Pricing specialist are the ones that take in the request to update or draw up
a new price for these high priority clients. The problem that I came to see is that these requests
aren’t being processed fast enough and are taking up 6 to 8 weeks, when with the previous
specialist they took no longer than 4 weeks. Many sales executives are complaining, and some
have even reported the new pricing specialist because they are losing clients.
I came to realize that the previous pricing specialist would draw up a brief request which
will allow the sales executives to continue into the next step of the acquiring process. This new
specialist does not fully submit any request till the entire documentation needed is turned in an
analyzed. The sales executives aren’t accustomed to giving a full detailed documentation request
because they use previously drawn up pricing within the same industry and just update the
numbers to the new clients. I would want to know if this new pricing specialist is doing the right
thing by not submitting the request until all the information is complete? Or if she should do as
the previous person was doing and starting a request to later come back and update the numbers
just to get the process going for the sales executives?
