SHAPE OF AN INTRODUCTION
The shape of an introduction when writing a formal--closed form--academic essay:
Most of the papers that one writes in an academic setting = closed form/thesis driven. An introduction for closed form/thesis driven writing takes the shape of an inverted pyramid.
Start with a big picture and then narrow the focus.
The thesis statement answers a specific question:

Pick one question to answer.

The thesis functions like a map. A good thesis statement writes the rest of the paper.

Create a transition to guide the reader to the next section.
