These are the instructions for your first paper 

For this assignment you will need to read the following article available through Plato under week 2.  ***Please note that O'Neil can be a dense article; read as much as you can, however, I only want you to use for the paper the quotes I have identified below.

1.  Bohannan, L. (1966). Shakespeare in the bush. In J. Spradley & D. McCurdy (Eds.), Conformity and conflict: readings in cultural anthropology (pp. 23-32). Boston: Allyn and Bacon.   

In this paper, you will apply the theoretical constructs I am listing below (taken from  O’Neil (1999) in Rationality), to Bohannan’s article (1966): Shakespeare in the bush.

You will need to complete a 4-6 page, double-spaced, typed paper.  

Theoretical constructs to discuss and apply to Bohannan's article:

Descartes:  "Reason is how we discover the truth in nature, without relying on the senses."

Condorcet: "Reason has been the driving force of history; once all nations have been enlightened, there will be agreement among them as to the moral principles that are to regulate international politics."

Popper: "Rationality is the key to progress, as manifested in scientific knowledge, however, this knowledge cannot ever be absolute."

Kuhn: " In any given discipline, one paradigm of inquiry dominates at a particular historical period.  Research does not question the rules and validity of the paradigm, until the flaws become evident." 

Relativism: "There are no objective criteria of rational justification and the truth of any theory is relative to a particular view of the world."

O'Neil: "Rather than thinking of rationality as the thread that holds together the story of human progress, we must stress the discontinuities and ruptures that inevitably ensue when one mode of rationality is illegitimately imposed on another."
