Week 7: Controversial Art and Censorship

Although controversial art is not a topic exclusive to the 20th century, the distribution of information regarding controversial art has increased with the proliferation of media. Please discuss an example of a 20th century controversial work of art from any discipline of the humanities (music, literature, sculpture, film, etc.) and an accompanying statement from the artist(s). Based on your example, to what extent does controversial art make a social contribution? Are governments ever justified in censoring art?

Professor and class,

A controversial work of art that comes to mind from the 20th century would be from the rap group NWA. They made a lot of controversial song throughout the 20th century but there is one in particular that comes to mind. The of the most controversial song ever song by them was “Express Yourself” in 1988. This was as mentioned by Finley, “The song addresses the restrictive limits on language in the music industry for rappers, and the video shows how African American people were often voiceless and punished when they spoke up. “ ( Finley, 2015). The other controversial song from NWA was called “F**K tha Police”. This was very controversial for the time were police brutality came to the for front. Ice Cube stated, ““It didn’t make us bite our tongue. It just made us stand up even more—and that’s powerful” (The FBI, 2015).

This had a huge impact on society and gave society an extra push to fight for what they believed in or what they thought was right. This gave them the motivation that most wanted to have and now had because people were talking about it.” The FBI as mentioned in our lesson was as well as law enforcement agencies investigating the group for helping launch fervent censorship campaigns” (CCN,2019).

I do believe that the government should have some say in what is censored and what is not however, I don’t think that the government should have all rights in censoring art because that is against our own rights. Our right for freedom of speech and freedom of choice. We should be able to express ourselves in any way we feel is right and that we believe will get the point a crossed. If we had the government censor everything, then what is the point of thinking for ourselves or acting for ourselves if the government is essentially telling us what we can and can not do or think. Yes, I think that they should censor things for children. However, I also think that if there is a will there is a way, if the child is ambitious enough, they will find a way to get the uncensored.
