Sexism

Hays and Erford defines sexism as a system of oppression based on sex, gender identity, and gender expression; many have stated that sexism is a system in which men hold privilege and women do not (Hays & Erford, 2018). Society brings about the negative stereotypes when it comes to privilege and oppression. I feel that men are stronger in some areas than women and should own up the responsibility in a household. But I think things have changed in this century because women are becoming more powerful than their mates, for example, in their careers. We all should be treated equal no matter the sex, or gender identity.

Examples of sexism ranges from, women being sexualized in the media for entertainment purposes, and as well as women earnings. The negative beliefs that’s being brought about in society today plays a role in why women accept what is being said and it’s basically becoming a mindset and making women lower their standards base off what society is saying. Also, race and ethnicity are another factor in sexism. Different cultures have their different beliefs. What one race may accept the other may not. Some cultures may allow their husband to have several wives and is fine with that because the male feel privileged. But in some other countries it is not tolerated.

In the counseling profession, counselors should know how to work with a diverse culture and how to communicate effectively with each group of people. With sexism being based on sex, gender identity and gender expression. Counselors can counsel women who has been in different situations as to where they feel low due to the positions they have been put in due to privileged men. Counselors may use the American Counseling Association Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competences (Hays & Erford, 2018). It helps inform understanding of gender and sexism. Counselors must be aware of their own values and beliefs before working with the diverse groups. Counselors may use different techniques as well to help women overcome their fears and to speak up about their beliefs and rights to being equal in certain situations.  

In biblical terms, we as humans have the privilege to come to continually come to Christ. “As you come to him the living stone-rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him” -1 Peter 2:4. Being able to stay strong and believe that change can happen in society is important. A lot of faith can change what we thought was impossible.
