Session 7: Quality Management and the Patient Experience/Telehealth (6/28-7/04)202102_Quality Interprof Care Client_NURS_3123_VA2 Weekly Sessions

Session 7: Quality Management and the Patient Experience/Telehealth (6/28-7/04)

Overview

The Quality Chasm reports identied 10 rules that describe an improved health system. Four out of ten of the rules relate to the patient experience. These rules are “Care is based on continuous health relationship; care is customized according to patient needs and values; the patient is the  source of control; and knowledge is shared and information ows freely” (IOM, 2001, p. 8).  As nurses we must engage the patient and their family in all aspects of their care, including continuous quality improvement eorts. We must recognize that “ patients are  experts in their own care and the care of their loved ones. They consistently identify adverse events not detected through other means. Engaged patients are also more satised and report higher quality communication with providers. Patient engagement can improve outcomes but only when their expertise is eectively mobilized” (Stern & Sarkar, 2017).

Objectives

Explain the relationship of patient-centered and patient family engagement in continuous quality improvement (CO1,2, 5) Summarize the role of the patient in CQI (CO 1,5) Examine eorts to monitor and measure patient satisfaction and engagement (CO 2, 5) Apply methods to increase patient/family engagement in CQI (CO 1)
