RESULTS, IMPLICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

MPH 231

Tonight’s agenda

Lecture:

◦ Interpreting Results

◦ Implications for Policy,

Practice and Research

◦MPH competencies

◦Breakout groups

What are you doing with the ILE? ◦ The ILE represents a culminating experience for the degree and can take many forms.

◦ According to CEPH: “As the criteria were developed, one message that we heard strongly from

employers was about the need for MPH graduates to be able to engage in substantive, logically

flowing writing.”

◦ The high-quality written product is meant to be an organization and synthesis of thoughts and

information.

◦ Students must demonstrate synthesis of specific foundational and concentration competencies

through the experience and produce a high-quality written product.

◦ Ideally, the written product is developed and delivered in a manner that is useful to external

stakeholders, but this is not a requirement.

Interpreting Results

What did you discover/synthesize?

What is the output of your analysis?

The result of your methods?

Not everything is a result! Make a judgement call.

Results Overall Sample Characteristics (n = 177)

 49.2% had a LBW birth

 26.6% reported discrimination by health care providers during pregnancy

 20.9% reported experiencing DV

 19.8% reported heating issues in their home

 16.9% reported seeings mice or rats in their home

 18.6% reported feeling unsafe in their neighborhood “often” or “always”

 39.5% reported being concerned about having enough food in the past month

 36.7% reported worried about bills “often” or “always”

Selected Variables, by LBW Status

Births among Black Women (n = 177), Controlling for Background Variables

Conclusions/ Implications

How can you take your results and apply them to the problem you started with?

Think about telling a story with a beginning (problem), middle (methods/results) and end (discussion/conclusion)

How is what you found relevant to the population at risk/that you care about?

What can be done with your results?
