• Data visualization
• Ethical considerations
• Coming up……
Collecting & Analyzing Data
• Data are classified into two main types, primary and secondary data. In addition, this data may be qualitative or quantitative
• Primary data is information that is collected first-hand by those conducting the assessment. This type of data would include original information gathered through surveillance activities, focus groups, interview and observations.
• Secondary data is information that has already been collected by someone else. Often secondary data already have been analyzed and disseminated and can be used without any additional calculations. Sometimes secondary data has some analysis completed or may be available in unanalyzed or raw form.
Collecting & Analyzing Data
• What does it look like for different ILE projects?
• Qualitative or Quantitative Research study: Primary data (could be secondary)
• Policy Brief: Secondary data
• Program Plan: Secondary data
• Evaluation: Primary and Secondary data
• Systematic Literature Review: Primary data
• Grant application: Secondary data
If you are conducting PRIMARY data collection: [What is your research question/what do you want to know]
• How are you collecting it? • Surveys, interviews, focus groups, observations, content analysis
• Where are you collecting it? • In person, online, databases
• When are you collecting it? • Timeframe
• Who are you collecting it from? • Target population, sample size, human subjects
If you are conducting SECONDARY data collection: [What is your research question/what do you want to know]
• What data do you want to represent?
• What is the source?
• How recent are the data?
• How was it collected/quality of the data?
• Do you have access to the raw data or just summaries?
• Can it be combined with other data?
ILE Type Methods
Quantitative/Qualitative Research Primary or Secondary data: Survey, medical records, interviews, focus groups
Policy Brief Review and summarize policies (local, state, federal) that address different aspects of the problem/focus, what are the positive/negative aspects of them?
Program Plan Review other programs that have addressed the problem/issue and describe HOW you will implement your program
Program Evaluation Data collected on the program activities and outcomes: program participants, activities, outputs (process evaluation); results of those activities—surveys, health outcomes, behavior changes, educational changes
Systematic Review Follow PRISMA process
Grant Application What are you proposing in your grant? What are the activities you are engaging in?
Writing Your Methods Section
• Detailed information so that it could be replicated
• Characteristics of sample (demographics table)
• Methods used for data collection
• Materials used
• Explanation of methods used to protect human subjects
• Validity and reliability of data collected
• Statistical tests or type of analysis used for data
• Use subheadings to answer each question
Data analysis
• How will you analyze the data once you have it?
• Quantitative data: descriptive statistics, univariate, multivariate • Spreadsheet, statistical software, Excel
• Qualitative data: thematic analysis, grounded theory • Transcribed, code book, Word, software
• With secondary data, you may only have the final analysis—how will you interpret it for your project?
Data Presentation and Visualization
Purpose of data visualization • Condense large amounts of complex data into easy to understand format
• Helps to convey your results
• Create a picture of data
• Don’t freestyle: look to see what are the accepted ways to present the type of data you are using (from journal articles, APA style guide, etc.)
• Needs to be easy to read and understand
