Is surveillance monitoring employees going too far?

To blatantly answer the question , No. i feel as though it’s one of the only ways to ensure safety and trust in both sides. Yes as an employee sometimes I just want to say “ we aren’t stealing” but employers never really know who they have working for them at the end of the day.

employers never really know who they have working for them at the end of the day.

What are the reasons why companies decide to use these solutions?

Mostly due to employee theft and theft from other customers. I’ve also seen safety hazards happen within the store so cameras would be a good option for anyone filing a lawsuit or claim for injury. It overall strengthens the case for the employer as its 4K footage evidence incase they need it.

Does constant surveillance create trust issues between the employer and employee? I feel most employees don’t mind as they are there to do their job and leave. I honestly forget a camera is in the break room or all throughout the building because I know I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing at the end of the day. But some employees have felt like they are being targeted and watched by employers who don’t personally like them which can cause trust issues.

How does surveillance impact mood, motivation, productivity, and sense of security. ⁃ More or less stressful?

Sometimes I feel it can cause stress as you never know if your boss is watching you closely or not. It’s stressful not knowing if you’re completing your tasks right .

⁃ More or less motivated?

I honest feel way more motivated to do my tasks correctly and efficiently. I like the idea of my boss knowing I’m doing what I need to be and not slacking off during my shift. The camera provides evidence of my tasks and I like making my boss proud. ⁃ More or less productive?

I feel more productive knowing that there’s little to no room for error or slacking off as my higher ups can pull me to the side about my work ethic or progress. I always feel like I SHOULD be doing something. ⁃ Stressed or relaxed?

Definitely stressful but a good type of stress. I’d personally rather be stressed and doing what I need than too relaxed and slacking off, making my boss question my position at the job. As an anxious person I move well under pressure. Strict rules encourages me to do my best.

Which of the following do you know to have been used by your workplace?” • CCTV • Web filters and blockers • GPS system • Social media monitoring software • AI cameras • Biometrics • Keystroke logging software • Mouse tracking software

How often does theft occur at your job ?

More often than you would think. I would say around once or twice every two weeks mostly by customers and a hand full of times a month by employees. Most of these cases go unsolved as customers easily stuff merchandise in their pocket and walk out without anyone trying to stop them or noticing.

Have you seen any employee theft at your job?

Yes, most definitely. It’s much easier for employees to steal as they know the ins and outs of the store. They know where blind spots are in the cameras and are easily able to take multiple items without mangers knowing. I’ve overheard other employees mention workers getting fired after being caught stealing over $500 worth of merchandise from the store over a short period of time . They must not be a slick as they think if workers are constantly getting caught and fired

Does surveillance of employees make you uncomfortable ?

Yes and no. While it does encourage me to complete all my tasks and work. I do feel a little uncomfortable knowing they could be watching me at any given point in time. Also, if there’s a higher up who doesn’t particularly like me, I feel as though they could utilize the monitoring system to track any time I’m not on my tasks to harass and build up a case against me and possibly get me fired which I’ve seen happen before.

Monte Jones

Is surveillance monitoring employees going too far?

The only time I don’t particularly agree with surveillance is when they watch your social media. I don’t see how my life outside of work has anything to do with having the skill to work. I rarely post by the way. Not only that, it depends how you use it. It can be a problem if the system was abused .

What are the reasons why companies decide to use these solutions?

To protect their company and assets. To prevent theft and crime against workers. Not only that . They keep them just in case someone sues them.

(Has someone sued ?) No one has ever sued before because we have video evidence on our side but people tried to lie and say “This happened” when it never did.

Does constant surveillance create trust issues between the employer and employee?

Yes it encourages workers to not only keep their distance from each other just so we won’t get in trouble or we think. Honestly, Workers may feel that their privacy is being invaded, or that the employer doesn't trust them enough to allow some privacy in the workplace. They speak on having some privacy because they have been working at their job for years and the company should know and respect that

Which of the following do you know to have been used by your workplace?” Here’s what they answered: • CCTV • AI cameras • Biometrics • Keystroke logging software • Mouse tracking software

I don’t know exactly what we use but we do use CCTV, cameras, logging software and keycards .

How often does theft occur at your job ?

Yes , almost everyday , it’s hard to catch everyone, but what people don’t know is we know who’s doing it because of surveillance equipment.

(So a lot of people get arrested or in trouble when caught ?) Yes and No, sometimes when we do catch them we either hold them until the police arrive or we get a bill of everything they stole and send them a bill from the company’s lawyer .

How did you find out that you are being monitored?

Here is a secret, I know because I watch my boss ( laughing ) . If they come back knowing more than what I told them or they start popping up around more than normal. They did tell us some of the surveillance we have but I know the store , so it’s easier for me to get around because I know where is some “weak point”
