SENECA BIOGRAPHY NOTES

Seneca 4 BC - 65 AD
-Born in Cordoba Spain at the beginning of Christian era.
-His father and grand father were accomplished legal judges.
-Seneca was attracted to both law and philosophy.
-He studied under several Stoic teachers.
-Eventually, he went to Rome and became a political advisor.
-He was disciplined by Emperor Caligula in 39 AD.
-He was banish to Corsica by Emperor Claudius in 41 AD.
-He was recall to Rome to tutor the young Nero in 49 AD.
- He served as Emperor Nero's political advisor from 54 - 62 AD.
-In 65 AD he was accused in a plot against the, some would say insane at this point, Nero.
-Rather than face the death penalty, he gathered his friends for a grand dinner party, told them all what he really thought of Nero, and then committed ritual suicide in 65 AD.
-Other famous Stoics include the following:
-Cicero (106-43 BC) Roman Statesman and Orator.
-Seneca (4 BC-65 AD)
- Epitetus (60-117 AD) Born a slave yet became a great Stoic philosopher.
-Marcus Aurelius (121-180 AD) Roman Emperor and famous Stoic philosopher.
-Seneca himself as a Stoic is not known as much for his original thought as he is for his excellent writing which features an almost evangelical force because of his fine
