What is phenomenology

The study of the development of human consciousness and self-awareness; the lived- experience of a person. Derived from the disciplines of psychology & philosophy

( source: Merriam Webster Dictionary)

What is existentialism?

A philosophy concerned with finding self and the meaning of life through free will, choice and personal responsibility

( source: Merriam Webster Dictionary)

What is spirituality?

Broad concept, generally includes a relationship with a higher power; a sense of connection with something “bigger” than ourselves; typically involves a search for meaning

What is Metaphysics?

Metaphysics is defined as the branch of philosophy that examines the true nature of reality, whether visible or invisible. Basically, metaphysics is the philosophical study of being and knowing.

Metaphysics focuses on the “big questions”:

What am I? What is birth? Do I matter?

Values of the Human Caring Science

Deep respect and openness for the wonders, mysteries, and even miracles of life and the power of humans to change and evolve to a deeper/higher level of consciousness.

According to Teihard de Chardin, one wants to evolve toward the omega point, to become more godly, more holy, more divine, more in line with one’s spiritual destiny, dignity, and one’s soul’code (Watson, 2012, p.88)

A Human Caring Science Context:

Life is not a problem to be solved but a mystery to be lived. ( Watson, 2012, p.22)

Transpersonal Caring- Caring Science

Transpersonal caring relationships- foundation of Watson’s work.

Occurs when the one caring connects with an embraces the spirit of the other through authentic, full attention in the here and now, and conveys a concern for the inner life and personal meaning of another (Watson, 2012, p. 17)

Requires the ability to be present to self and other in a reflective state.

Application of Transpersonal Caring:

Caring Moments, Caring Occasions:

Occurs whenever the person and another come together with their life histories, creating a distinct caring moment in space and time (Watson, 2012, p.18).

Involves both action & choice....being in the moment…being present to another

Involves learning from each other how to be human…finding the other’s dilemmas in us

Caring (Healing) Consciousness

Transpersonal caring exists in consciousness

Evolving consciousness within the individual, comes to acknowledge love as the highest consciousness. (Watson, 2012, p.19)

10 carative processes

Goals of Human Caring Theory:

Associated with the evolving heart-centered human, honoring mental-spiritual and evolving consciousness to higher, deeper awareness for self and others, finding meaning in one’s own suffering, existence and experiences, discovering inner power and control, and potentiating instances of transcendence and self healing (Watson, 2012, p.88)

What is soul making?

According to Keats (1819) soul-making is the interaction of the intelligence, the human heart and the world. The heart is the mediator between the mind and the world and thus the conduit to soul-making.

The soul is the self as formed by the narrative circumstances of one’s life.

( Fong, 2014)

Questions for Discussion

1) Discuss Watson's view of the body and soul.

2) In the reading, Nature of Human Life and Subject Matter of Nursing and in particular the quotation of Jung ( 1068, p.99), comment on whether you agree or disagree with the statement; ...people..." have not the slightest faith that anything useful could ever come out of their own soul"

3) After reading and reflecting on the 10 Caritas Processes that can cultivate caring moments or caring occasions, select "one" of the Caritas Processes that you feel is most important or resonates with you in cultivating caring.
