Part 1: I would like you to select one passage from each of the two chapters you read this week (Chapters 6 and 7) from "Privilege, Power and Difference". Copy each passage remembering to cite the page number for each passage. Why did you select these two passages? What is the author saying in each passage? Do you agree or disagree with one of them, or both? Share your thoughts.

It is important that you understand this term (which has been very helpful in identity politics). One main reason for the introduction of this video and the concept of intersectionality is that I want to make sure that when you write your paper you deliberately choose to stay in one social membership (age, ethnicity, religion, etc.). I want to very much discourage you from taking on the multiple intersections of someone's experiences (for example a black woman -- two social memberships). It's not that I don't want you to understand this important concept. Rather, it is because it will make your paper more complicated to write. I haven't taught you enough about the complexity of intersectionality for you to do justice to this concept in your 2nd interview paper. Send me a response that let's me know you have watched the video and understand what "intersectionality" means.

For this second paper, please stay focused on one social membership: to return to my example, you would interview her with questions about her ethnicity (what it is like being black in the United States?) or her gender (what is it like being female in the United States?). Not both. (I recognize that for this particular interview, your interviewee might want to talk about both (black and female), but I encourage you to write as much as you can about one of her social memberships.)
