Part 2: Museum Analysis

Art Museums

Visit a local art museum in person and analyze one artwork from the culture/region that you signed up for. The best Dallas/Fort Worth museums for this project are listed below.

· Dallas Museum of Art

· Crow Collection of Asian Art, Dallas

· Kimbell Museum, Fort Worth

Note: You may visit any museum as long as it is a fine art museum that includes artworks from your chosen culture/region.

Planning Your Visit

1. Check the museum’s website for hours of operation. Most museums have free general admission, and the ones that don’t usually offer a student discount. KEEP IN MIND: Most museums are closed on Mondays.

2. View the links in the Part 2: Museum Analysis folder of the Semester Project for more information about what to expect when you go to the museum.

3. Print a copy of the Formal Analysis Template to take with you to the museum. Bring a pencil (most don’t allow pens in the galleries) and a hard surface for writing, like a binder or clipboard.

At the Museum

1. Locate a gallery that contains artworks from the culture/region you signed up for (such as Africa, Oceania, etc.).

2. Select one piece that was made in that region. It can be any medium or material.

3. Use the Formal Analysis Template to take detailed notes on the piece.

a. Make sure you answer all sections completely. If anything is not used in the work, note that, too.

b. Most of your observation should be completed in person, not while viewing a photo later.

c. The dimensions (size) of the work will not be provided at the museum. You can give your best estimate, or check the museum’s website. Write dimensions as Height x Width ( x Depth if three-dimensional), and include a unit of measure such as inches or centimeters.

4. Take a photo of your chosen artwork.

a. Check with museum employees before photographing any art.

b. NEVER use flash in a museum or gallery!

c. If photography is not allowed, you may be able to find a photo of the artwork on the museum website or in the gift shop.

5. Get some kind of proof of your visit. This can be a photo of yourself inside the building (Snapchat geofilters are welcome!), or a receipt, brochure, or wristband. Upload a picture of the proof and submit with your notes.

After Your Visit

1. Type your notes into the digital copy of the Formal Analysis Template.

a. This does not need to be a formal paper with an introduction and paragraphs, but please use complete sentences and normal punctuation.

b. Answer only the questions about what the piece looks like. Don’t add any speculation about what it means. That is not formal analysis, and outside information would require citation.

2. Add the photo of your chosen artwork to the top of the document.

3. Add the photographic proof of your visit to the end of the document.

4. Submit your document in eCampus as a .docx or .pdf file.
