1. Kibria_Family Tightrope_Changing Lives of Vietnamese Americans

Pay attention to how Vietnamese immigrants reconstruct their family lives to "make it" in the U.S. We will use this reading to think about how Asian Americans  are in some ways expected to adopt American values at the cost of spirit/culture of family.

2. The Colonial Context of Filipino American Immigrants’ Psychological Experiences File

We will use this article (written by Filipino American scholars) as a jumping off point to help us think about colonial mentality as a cultural wound for people whose lineages trace back to many countries throughout Asia that experienced European colonization: India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Macau; as well as island nations now known as American territories: Guam, American Samoa, Hawaii.
